What Owners Say
"It was a known issue, but took several years to get a resolution which was a complete rebuild of the engine"
Anonymous, IL (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Cylinder 1 gives error codes Audi says can not be fixed . They have tried a variety of solutions, none work. The next step is to open it up, which may not fix it and the engine never be the same again"
Damon N., CO (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Piston #1 misses all the time and Audi could not fix it. Steering pump needed replacement and now it need a qt of oil ever 1500 mi."
Damon N., CO (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"The car started going through 1 quart of oil every 400 miles. about a year ago and is still burning at that rate. The internet search indicated that his is a common problem and cost to repair is about $8000."
Anonymous, TX (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"There was a class action lawsuit re: a manufacturing defect in my engine (See links below), but my vehicle didn't exceed the threshold of oil consumption in time to qualify for the free repair before the terms of the recall expired. My dealer performed the repair at cost (about 50% off the normal cost), which I found acceptable, but the problem of oil consumption persisted for years before they acknowledged the problem and performed the repair. The problem got increasingly worse, I had to add a quart of oil about every 1000 miles at the end. The vehicle has been fine since the repair (June 2019). It is now repaired, and I still enjoy the vehicle. I'm mostly annoyed that the dealer did not acknowledge and repair, under warranty, a defect they surely recognized earlier. Anonymous, MD (2011 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"It was burning oil so Audi did a ring job on it, and no problems since. It was on warranty"
Anonymous, CO (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Excessive loss of oil required new rings"
Anonymous, PA (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"This model had a tendency to use excessive amounts of oil, and ours turned out to be one of them. I don't know all what the dealer did, but they had to pretty much rebuild the engine to fix the problem. And the problem is fixed."
Stanley J., PA (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"oil consumption high -Audi replaced the piston rings"
Anonymous, PA (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"tremendous oil consumption. Audi rebuilt pistons and rings at no charge"
Anonymous, AZ (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Around 100,000 kms (about 1 month after the AudiCare warranty expired) the engine oil consumption started increasing from about 1 litre per 5-7000 km to 1 litre per 3000 km. Nothing was noted by the dealership at 109,000 km servicing. When oil consumption increased to 1 litre per 1500 km (around 120,000 km and 9 months after last service), I booked another service appointment with dealership to check oil consumption issue. Four days prior to appointment, the engine failed at 120116 km. Had vehicle towed to dealership. Apparently the timing chain tensioner failed, caused piston to over-extend and damage cylinder head. Complete head & piston replacement required, including timing chain, tensioner, bearings & gaskets. As well, the turbocharger wastegate was found to be flapping in the breeze. Turbocharger replacement required. I suggested that this was very un-Audi-like and asked Audi to cover the cost of this kind of catastrophic product failure. Audi Canada offered to cover the cost of the parts however the parts don't install themselves and I was stuck with a $8,900 labor charge from the dealership, a cost that Audi has NOT reimbursed me for. I am surprised and I feel betrayed that Audi accepts no responsibility for this kind of product failure at 120,000 km. If you recall, when I last shared my Audi experience with CR, I praised the vehicle's lasting durability and lack of any issues with ownership. I do not feel that way anymore."
Norman K., AB (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Excessive oil usage, pistons replaced. Then had problem with turbo. Dealer wanted to charge 3k but Audi had extended Warranty to 7 years 70 thousand"
Anonymous, NJ (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Excessive oil consumption. Repair included new piston rings. Problem appears to be fixed"
Anonymous, OR (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Engine had to be rebuilt in accordance to the class action lawsuit"
Anonymous, OH (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Constantly burning or blowing out oil. Took several visits to dealership to verify damage and initiate a repair. Dealer finally rebuilt the engine to correct a PVC error"
Anonymous, IN (2011 Audi A4 3.2 3.0-L V6 supercharged)"Oil in exhaust on acceleration and adding oil very frequently. Dealer ran diagnostics and replaced the rings in the engine without charge"
Anonymous, FL (2011 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Seems there is a common problem with these engines losing internal oil seal and directly adding oil to the incoming fuel mix. Got down to consuming 1 quart per 100 miles of driving. There is no option to replacing the engine other than replacing the car"
Barry F., CT (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"At about 45000 mi, Car began burning almost as much oil as gas. Initially, dealer replaced defective turbocharger. Problem persisted. After much research discovered that this was common and Audi had a little-known court settlement requiring them to repair or replace the engine in these cases. Ultimately, the engine had to be pulled and completely rebuilt - took a month. While out of regular warranty, Audi had to pick up expense. Along with other problems like failing brakes, this is the least reliable car I have ever owned."
Anonymous, NY (2011 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Oil circulation to engine causing engine failure, also high oil consumption Engine failure at 44000 miles Audi response dealer service reports not available for life of car so no liability to them we were on our own"
Anonymous, (2011 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"The engine consumed oil since it was new, at a rate or ~one quart every 3-4000 miles. Audi denied that it was a real "problem", but it persisted, and worsened at ~60000 miles, to one quart every 500 miles. Audi made no attempt to repair the problem, and unbeknownst to me, a class-action suit was brought against Audi by owners also experiencing this problem, which turned out to be a defect in the engineering of the engine, and which Audi settled by rebuilding the engines of those cars involved in the suit. But they did not notify me of this settlement, and my car's engine continued to deteriorate. At my service visit in mid-2019, they determined that the engine required rebuilding, a $7500 repair; the value of the vehicle at that time was in the range of $2000, so clearly not worth repairing. I am now in the market for a replacement vehicle."
Anonymous, NY (2011 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"The engine was a problem and Audi/VW paid for 3/4 of the replacement/rebuild. We paid $3000. the other $2700 was for fuel pump, brakes, etc."

Anonymous, FL (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"We are now subject to a class action suit where timing belts have had to be replaced at the amount of $2,400."
Timothy W., CA (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Timing chain failed. Fortunately it was sitting in my garage when it happened. Car would not start. Audi repaired under warranty"
Anonymous, TX (2011 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)"The design of the original timing chain tensioner was faulty and at 52,000 miles allowed the chain to jump a tooth on the sprockets. This caused the engine to barely run without enough torque to run faster than about 20 mph. I learned that had the chain jumped one more tooth the valves would have been destroyed so the car was towed to a shop where the chain and tensioner were replaced. A class action suit was brought against Volkswagon of America (Audi's owner) about this issue and initially we were told that we would be reimbursed for the repair work only if it was performed by an authorized dealer (I used an independent) but recently I was told that charges from an independent would be covered up to the cost of a dealer's rate. So far I haven't seen any such reimbursement even though I submitted a claim several months ago."
