The Audi A4 remained highly competitive. In fact, this A4 was nearly everything a compact sports sedan should be. It has a solid, high-quality feel and the interior is exquisite. Agile handling makes it fun to drive and the ride, though quite firm, is supple and controlled. The cabin is quiet unless you ask the turbocharged four-cylinder engine to work hard.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Audi A4 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"Would not boot up on start"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The knob that one has to turn to control finding radio stations and phone numbers, is not working consistently and when I took it into audi, the service person told me it is VERY expensive to repair and that if I can live with it I should avoid the cost. Why this part is failing I don't know but again at 4 years as soon as my warranty was out (ended dec 2018) it became a problem in Feb 2019). What else is going to happen I don't know but this car is becoming a problem. Also the newer cars have better ergonomic designs and also let you know when the car is actually turned off. My mosel may still have the motor on when I think it is turned off."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"especially in cold weather screen does appear for some time - appears to be very cold weather related - no fix"

Anonymous, AB (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Screen and entire system randomly stopped working"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Though it isn't touch screen, which i'm glad, the controls are quite ambiguous and confusing."

Ed E., NY (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"I many of the routes it chooses are very inefficient. Example: On an easy to plan and navigate 200 mile route it plans a 300 mile route through a large metropolitan city. I do understand its settings and what they do"

Michael P., TX (2014 Audi A4 3.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The GPS would lose the satellite and would not know where the car was"

Sam V., NJ (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Voice on the GPS became very low volume and had to be corrected. The total experience of using the GPS is awkward and slow, compared to my Garmen Nuvy"

Anonymous, WI (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It certainly isn't a garmin. Directing me to turn after I pass the intersection, go on one way streets the wrong way, and there are more. Our reliance on gps is huge and fortunately I am able to think on my feet while I drive and not do anything stupid that the gps talks me. Hats upsetting, there is no way to upgrade the firmware/software without spending over 400.00.. my 60.00 garmin has free upgrades. If I do travel to a new area, I usually have my garmin plugged in and ready as well."

Ed E., NY (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The GPS is very difficult to use and is sometimes inaccurate. I rely mostly on my phone Google map."

Wayne S., CA (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Took it in twice to the dealer. The mechanics didn't fix it, but a salesman seems to have solved the problem."

Wayne S., CA (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Radio

"First I must say, over the first couple of years of complaining to Audi, i first get the usual double talk about where I live, did you try in other areas, why don't you get satellite, blah blah blah, to which I stated, look, this isn't my first car radio. Finally, I got a service rep to fess up and admit it. ( off the record of course) that there is a problem. This radio can not pull in stations clearly. There is interference on 99% of channels it tries to pull in. Now this not may be a 'radio' problem as much as an antenna problem, I don't know. However, the days of unplugging the antenna from the back of the radio and replacing it for a new antenna are over. The circuit board for the roof antenna is not easily accessible and not cheap to swap out. This is am and fm. I do not have sattilite nor do I intend to. Unfortunately because it,s not a safety issue, Audi never came clean and upgraded even while it was under warranty."

Ed E., NY (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It may not be the radio per se. AM/FM radio reception is very bad. Station signals just don't get pulled in. While the car was under warranty, it was checked by the dealer more than once and was told there is nothing wrong and it must be where i live. They lied right to my face. Eventually it was easy enough to read all the complaints after Google-ing. This is not my first car radio, and this alone is enough to not get another Audi. The Audi people never admitted there was a problem. That is all i would have wanted. At least fess up to it. I enjoy AM/FM radio. I always have."

Ed E., NY (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Voice control commands

"It worked fine once and every time we tried after that once, it just doesn't work so we gave up using it"

Anonymous, WI (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"vibrating"

Anonymous, IL (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Calipers

"Passenger side caliper froze (stuck in partially compressed position)"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Parking brake

"Parking brake console indicator would flash indicating one or more wheel modules (controlled electronically) were not functioning. Had car in to dealer twice and had brake activator motor replaced. On the third trip to dealer they finally replaced the master brake control module and problem has not returned. Believe control module was the problem all along"

Mitchell L., CO (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Premature brake wear

"Front brake pads worn at 30K miles. Wear indicated by squeeking sound when pressing on the brake at low speed. Dealer replaced them and rotors at a cost of $800. This despite mostly highway mileage and conservative driving practices"

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Rear brakes need rotors/pads at 45000 km"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The inside rear brake pads wore down to the metal. I reported the problem of hearing metal on metal grinding sounds from the brakes to the dealer. He was unable to find the problem on the first two visits. After insisting that they take the caliper off the rotor, the technician found the worn out pads. All the other pads on the car, front and rear were ok. Mystified as to why two out of eight pads wore out and unimpressed with the dealer's skill."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Squeaking

"Brake calipers had to be taken apart and cleaned twice due to break squeal"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Brakes squeak loudly, like metal on metal, in cold weather. The noise goes away after 5-10 minutes after the brakes warm up but the noise is alarming"

Anonymous, DC (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Persistent squeaking in cold weather. Dealer said that they have taken it up with Audi CA as other owners complained of same. Were unable to resolve after repeated attempts. Dealer said squeaking is due to steel construction of brake systems"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Brakes squeal consistently."

Anonymous, (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Because of a disk design flaw the original disks collect dust buildup which causes the squeak."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Audi A4 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

David K., MA (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"Power steering pump was leaking. This was the 2nd such repair within the year due to a faulty 1st replacement."

Anonymous, NV (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Shocks or struts

"Had my Audi in to dealer for 15000 mile check and was informed that at least one of the suspension struts was leaking. At a subsequent appointment, the dealer replaced both shocks under warrantee"

Mitchell L., CO (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"Steering alternating heavy and light"

Anonymous, MB (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"would not accelerate past 10 mph. numerous caution lights on. I pulled off the road and shut off engine. When I restarted it ran normally. Engine computer replaced under warranty and no further problems experienced"

G B., TX (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"from stop car failed to accelerate above 10 mph and numerous caution lights illuminated. I pulled to curb and shut engine off. when I restarted it most lights went out and car performed normally. Dealer replaced engine control unit under warranty. No further problems"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Sticky intake valves and loose wiring for ignition coils"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Engine mounts

"engine motor mount on turbo side of engine failed...had it replace same time as engine rebuild."

Anonymous, IA (2014 Audi A4 Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Oil leaks

"Very expensive repairs."

Anonymous, (2014 Audi A4 Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"I ticked the box on oil leaks because it was closest to the actual problem. The real problem is the engine burns oil at a very high rate. It started having this problem at 43000km which is relatively low Km. It has gotten worse so that now the engine consumes 1 litre of oil every 1500 km of driving. I have owned 11 vehicles in my life and put over 250000km on each and none of them burned oil at all let alone at this rate. Dealership refused to recognize this as a problem they would fix even when the car was under warranty."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"valve covers gasket and timing chain cover gaskets both had to be replaced at the cost of over $2000.00 and that was with a 10% dealer coupon! when asked, the service manager told me that 15-20% of Audi A4s require this replacement at 50,000 miles! I emailed the main office telling them that this makes the problem a car defect! I also wrote to the NTSB and they should make it a recall at no cost to the owners. I found this to be negligent and inexcusable that they continue to sell this car knowing this problem exists and is common. They making a fortune when they put in defective parts that magically leak after your 4 year extended service contract ends (my ended in Dec.2018 and the car had a leak the end of April 2019. I bought the car based in large part on the recommendation of CR and find your evaluations to be very lacking and not art all reassuring that anything you recommend can be counted on. Consumers should have had some history on this car by 2014 and may have wanted to review from dealerships the most common problems during the first 4 years of ownership. I have normally kept my cars for 13 and 14 years and maintain them. I am very upset about this repair that happens to 20% of these cars and that it is not because of maintenance but failure of parts. I don't know what will fail next on this vehicle, but i believe there are other problems that will arie from defective parts."

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Fuel injection system

"Injector failed one one cylinder, causing engine stop"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The dealerships suspected the Fuel injectors and fuel pumps as likely causes to the intermittent engine cutoffs."

Anonymous, (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Fuel injector stuck open. It happened only once. The driving conditions were sever enough to pull over and have it towed to the garage."

Anonymous, NV (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Fuel pump

"Two Audi dealerships have been unable to determine the cause of engine shutdown after the vehicle has been running over 1 hour in hot Florida temperatures. Fuel pumps and other parts have been replaced yet this intermittent problem persists. It is troubling that the Audi engine computer sensors and diagnostic equipment are insufficient to register or track the failing component(s). It is also costly to myself as a customer and troubling that Audi dealerships take a guess at the part to replace and if problem continues then return to dealership for another part replacement ... to continue until eventually repaired. It is unsafe and frightening to be in heavy traffic, on a hot summer day, to have the Audi A4 engine cut out completely and not restart until it has cooled off for approximately 30 minutes."

Anonymous, (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Car started lurching and I got it to a dealer. They fixed it quickly and it was under warranty"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Audi A4 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Fuel pump leak that caused check engine light to go on."

Anonymous, CO (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"moisture entered and light needed to be replaced. Part needed to be ordered, was without car for 3 days"

Frank A., MA (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"One headlight went out. It happens from time to time, though car was only four years old. Then a month later the other headlight also went out. This is unacceptable on a car only four years old for both headlights to fail. Audi did help me out a little with the issue (not fully covered by warranty)."

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"The choices listed in the first page did not allow a clear indication of the problem, therefore I indicated oil leaks and cylinder head. The actual problem is that the valve guides have worn prematurely at 41000 km and started to leak oil into the cylinder. This is evident from a) the car will emit a puff of blue smoke on initial start up first thing in the morning and it started to burn oil at the rate of 1 litre per 7000km. This is not a large amount of oil but it is not acceptable in a new ca"

Engine rebuild or replacement

"Started Oct.2019 engine was rebuilt because of a Piston failure which appears to have been cause by a detonation problem..got car back in late Feb. 2020. "There is a recall on the auxiliary heater. Mine has not given any problem and I am reluctant to have it fixed because to get to it, a lot of work is involved in the dash area. I'm afraid it will have rattles or other problems after the fix."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Audi A4 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Refrigerant leaks

"A large leak developed in the evaporator coil needing a full replacement. Luckily it was still under warranty at the time, but the repair would've cost $3,000 (from the dealership) and I was without my own vehicle for 2 weeks."

AIR BAGS
Oct 24, 2014
If the front air bags do not deploy in the event of a secondary impact to the front of the vehicle, there is an increased risk of occupant injury.
Summary:

(Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Audi A4 and S4 vehicles manufactured February 16, 2012, to October 21, 2014, and 2013-2015 Audi Allroad vehicles manufactured March 12, 2012, to October 21, 2014. Due to an improper algorithm in the air bag control module, if a crash necessitates deployment of the side air bags, a second impact to the front of the vehicle may not command the front air bags to also deploy.
