Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

Stylish and sporty, the Q5 is one of the better choices among compact luxury SUVs The Q5 feels solid, is rewarding to drive and has a plush, quiet cabin.

Audi's mid-size SUV delivers handling agility that inspires confidence and makes it fun-to-drive. The ride tends to come across as firm initially, but proves to be absorbent when needed and steady when cruising. The base four-cylinder turbocharged engine and eight-speed transmission racked up a commendable 21 mpg overall and provided decent performance. While capable, that engine is louder and less refined than the optional V6, subtracting some from the car's premium feel. Opting for the V6 brings much more refinement and an abundance of effortless thrust.

It has become louder over the past 18 months and diminishes the driving experience. The dealership cleaned and lubricated the sunroof and track assembly per maintenance schedule a little over a year ago. Lingde J., CA (2014 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The sunroof rattle was driving me crazy. Audi Central Houston wanted to replace it for $3k. I said no way. They packed it with felt for $400. I no longer use my sunroof. I'm just hoping it stays quiet. When it starts rattling again, I am selling this car."

Carmen C., TX (2014 Audi Q5 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"for several months this past winter experienced rattle in moonroof when closed. Dealer says that whole assembly would have to be replaced. Problem seems to be clearing up after running the assembly numerous times."

James T., WA (2014 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"There is a very faint rattle coming from somewhere behind the driver's seat. The dealership has had the car 5 times to fix it. They replaced the entire glass roof and said they basically took apart the car, each time telling me that it was fixed. It wasn't. The last time they had it for several days and it seemed to be fixed but I just heard it again recently."

"sunroof near constant issue for a while, finally seems to resolved."

Anonymous, NH (2014 Audi Q5 3.0 TDI 3.0-L V6 diesel)

"Panoramic sunroof developed a rattle. Audi knows this is a problem and offers a 'possible' fix of a felt strip. Dealer advised that this normally doesn't solve the problem resulting in a very expensive sunroof frame replacement. Problem was reported before end of warranty but because of commitments to travel, car couldn't get into service until after warranty. Audi dealer would not honour warranty."

After being pushed they agreed to replace the rotors and pads. 3 months later same problem. I brought it to another dealer and found out the first did not replace the rotors or pads. i called audi usa to make them aware of the fraud but they did nothing - they have no control over their dealers. at 25K i started to have problems again. Anonymous, NY (2014 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Since I got this car the brakes squeak for the first 5 mins as if they are worn - it goes away quicker if I pump or slam on my breaks a couple of times. Every time I talked to the service department at the local Audi about this, they tell me that it's just how the brakes are and that they squeak when there is moisture (i.e. morning dew) or dust (recommended power washing them which did not work for us). Every time I bring my car in to be serviced, I hope that they will tell me it's time to replace my brake pads, but this last time I went they said that for how old my car was the brake pads are holding up really well.... When I said something about changing them out to the newer model (which I was more than willing to pay for) the service department told me that they couldn't guarantee that the new ones wouldn't squeak. I'm going on about this because it's really annoying and at times embarrassing, but that said I really love my car and this is literally the only thing I can complain about."

"The primary portion of the front grill (the large, flat, black glossy part below the logo area) has a problem with blistered, peeling plastic. The dealer acknowledges it's a long-standing problem (not just a bad batch from a supplier). They also speculated it is caused by rocks hitting the grill. In-car Electronics

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"The backup camera often takes too long to load. You have to wait up to 5 seconds for the image to load. Also, when compared to the excellent backup camera on my Tesla Model S, the Audi system provides a less useful image that is not as clear"

External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The Q5 drives great, but the MMI system is antiquated. Dealers claimed it paired with most common devices; however, this was a lie. It could not pair with most phones and MP3 systems, nor could it pair with my Sears garage door opener"

Bruce B., CA (2014 Audi Q5 3.0 TDI 3.0-L V6 diesel)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"As discussed the navigation and radio etc are tied together. I thought it eould be just a minor circuit change but the whole system had to be replaced. I was without my vehicle for 4 days. Audi will allow you another vehicle but for me that is more stressful being responsible for someone elses vehicle."

Anonymous, LA (2014 Audi Q5 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"When bought, the dealer specifically stated the GPS was updated during routine maintenance. I later learned he lied and that the GPS was only updated annually for a $400 fee. This has resulted in my GPS mapping system becoming more out of date with every passing year and a potential hazard."

Voice control commands

"Audi is decades behind Tesla. I'm sure Audi's voice control system is on par for the market, but it falls well short of the standard I've come to expect after using the truly excellent voice control system in my Tesla Model S. The Audi system is slow, inaccurate, requires too many confirmations, and doesn't allow easy handoff to the physical buttons"

Anonymous, DC (2014 Audi Q5 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"iPhone will pair with car's bluetooth (it will play music for example)...but when you need to use phone, the voice control flakes out (not understanding what/who I'm asking for). In addition, when making a call, the system will regularly, immediately tell me "that contact is not available"...but it didn't even try dialing the number. This is part of a larger/overall problem with the entire MMi system. I've got persistent problems with the CD, radio dialer, navigation function & display. In"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Sometimes the system understands what I say and sometimes it doesn't. I "trained it" but that doesn't seem to make a difference. My wife's 2020 BMW X3 M40i system, on the other hand, works perfectly."

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"(All work under primary warranty) I had a latent defect in wiring to the control module that selling dealer would not spend effort to fix. Caused at least 13 drop offs to that dealer for an assortment of issues from steering control system and not releasing parking brake to warning of low oil level. At one point dealer over filled oil by two quarts due to relying on electronic oil level error and told me twice to ignore "Please reduce oil level" warnings. What Owners Say

Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"LED Daylight running light burned out Passenger side. Was in the shop for 3 days to fix. I was told that IF this wasn't a warranty issue then it would have cost over $600. That's pricy for a burned out bulb"

Anonymous, VA (2014 Audi Q5 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Daylight driving light fails intermittently. I have reviewed the problem on line and it is clearly the control module, a $399 part. Audi service say they need 2 hours shop time to diagnose the problem (this is just an LED side light). The cost of diagnosing the problem will be $275 + tax, which is on top of parts and labour. This will be almost a thousand dollars to fix a side light. If the light complex itself needs replacement rather than the control module, the cost will be close to $2000! Just for a daylight driving light"

Only when we emptied our trunk did I learn, FOR THE FIRST TIME, AUDI Q5S DO NOT HAVE SPARE TIRES!!!!. We had to be towed back home and also had to pay for a Lyft ride since they tow truck driver wouldn't let us ride in his cab. What Owners Say

Timing belt or chain

Anonymous, MN (2014 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"My engine light was going on and off sporadically for several months. I was told several times that my gas cap had not been set properly. Knew this wasn't the problem, so I kep a calendar indicating frequency and length of time light would be on. When I brought it back to service and showed them a 3-month record, they immediately knew it was the timing chain. Apparently, not an uncommon problem with Q5's of certain years and identified as a QA issue with the manufacture of the chains. Happened at about 75,000 miles. Vehicle was fixed at no cost to me as it was still under its certified pre-owned warranty. I was deemed fortunate that it was caught before the car died, causing severe damage to the engine."

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Check engine light on- mechanic says Hi pressure fuel and also low pressure fuel. Check high pressure fuel pump replacement. Did not solve problem. Timing chain tensioner all the way used and still slack in chain. Replaced timing chain solved problem. Audi diagnostic software took a long time to diagnose the problem."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Timing belt stretched prematurely and caused check engine fault that was difficult to diagnose, resulting in repairs to a sensor and fuel pump that did not eliminate the problem. Finally diagnosed by a regional service expert who visited the dealership and has worked fine ever since."

Turbo or supercharger

"Major Recall (18V229000) involve possible fire warning due to faulty after-motor pump that cools turbo. 1st part of recall was to disconnect power to pump while waiting for replacement pump; I was told 4 months. After not receiving notice that replacements were available, I contacted my Audi dealer who told me Audi decided not to replace the pumps. You design and widely deploy (VW & Audi's) an engine that requires a secondary coolant pump to keep the turbo from being damaged by excessive heat...and then decide never mind after a mass recall? Most mechanics I consulted said the life of the turbo is sure to be shortened without the pump. Because of this experience, as well as the number of other issues (including recalls) I've dealt with in just 5 years, I've decided to sell the car."

Tom G., NJ (2014 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"We have had issues with recalls on both cars. Takeda airbags are installed in both and there is a significant shortage of replacement parts. The most frustrating issue is that of repeated notifications from Audi that we need to have the recall issues fixed while simultaneously not having a sufficient number of replacement parts. This is complicated by the fact that the dealers and Audi USA do not seem to communicate with each other and as a result we receive conflicting information on how and when the issues will be resolved. We both love that cars and the dealer service provided. The multiple recalls on both is very frustrating with no apparent end in site. I wish that Audi USA would simply come clean and tell owners exactly what is going on rather than hiding behind a simple postcard suggesting that we have not been responsive to the recall issues."
