Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Stylish and sporty, the Q5 is one of the better choices among compact luxury SUVs, a growing category that includes the BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC. The Q5 feels solid, is rewarding to drive and has a plush, quiet cabin. Typically equipped it's priced in the mid- to high-$40,000s.

The Q5 delivers handling agility that inspires confidence and makes it fun-to-drive. The ride tends to come across as firm initially but proves to be absorbent when needed and steady when cruising. The base four-cylinder turbocharged engine and eight-speed transmission racked up a commendable 21 mpg overall while providing decent performance. While capable, that engine is louder and less refined than the optional V6, subtracting some from the car's premium feel. Opting for the V6 brings much more refinement and an abundance of effortless thrust but tends to push the price well into the $50,000s.

Anonymous, NC (2016 Audi Q5 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)
Display screen goes blank

"Upon start up the screen would be blank. Turning off the ignition and restarting would usually resolve the issue. The problem could not be replicated the one time I took it to the dealer. It has not done it in a long time so it may have resolved itself."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Audi Q5 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Apparently there was a software update needed. I was not informed until I had the problem"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The whole center unit that displays the backup camera, the radio, the CD player and the MMI unit went blank. I took it to the Dealer and they had to replace the control module 5F"

"Continuing problem of the GPS not being able to find the correct destination. System will find a similar location in another city or state for some addresses. I just left the Q5 with the dealer again today to fix the problem."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Slow to boot up."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Inaccuracies of some maps. Sporadic system (MMI) reboots fix problems."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Audi Q5 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"In dash Nav systems, in general are poor, and certainly too expensive. Twice in a city it took me around in circles and couldn't find the destination. Putting in a new destination is a PITA. At least this Nav system isn't a &*$# touchscreen so I can operate it with the controller without taking my eyes off the road."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Audi Q5 Unsure Unsure)

"Does not display song and artist information on MMI display"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Voice control commands

"Voice commands are worthless when using the navigation system. System does not identify correct city of trip or street."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Despite speaking carefully the voice recognition system works only about 10% of the time. Sometimes I ask for an address in a local community and the suggested address is across the country. And it is cumbersome to correct. Easier to use the manual input then, but dangerous if you are driving. Needs a lot of work!"

Then - as the car warms up, that break shreak kind of goes away. I asked the dealer, and they said it was typical for Audi Q5s. Really strange - it is literally my only complaint of the car from 2016"

Wheel balance

"Purchased this vehicle as Certified. On drive home the vibration was so bad we had to reduce speed. Reported it immediately. When I started reading the paperwork on the ‘certified’ vehicle, it showed an outstanding recall. I called a second time in 2 hours after getting home and the salesman tried to Gaslight me. Told me it had a clean Carfax report. Failed to understand the Audi Certification was the important reason for me as this meant Audi backed this used vehicle purchase. Sent an updated Carfax - big deal. Wanted verification of the repair. Back to the vibration problem. Took it in after scheduling an appointment with an assurance this would just take an hour or so. 1 hour in, they could not find any problem. Went for a drive with service manager. Sure enough, 70 mph and the vehicle is shimmying, steering wheel shaking. He says ‘I don’t see any problem’. Incredulous. Back to the dealership, we wait another 40 minutes and the car has not moved. We decide to leave and take it elsewhere. Next week take it to local repair shop (not Audi) and they find a 5 inch diameter patch of dried clay mud on the inside of a wheel. We bought the vehicle in January in the upper Midwest. And had not been above freezing the whole time we had the vehicle which meant that patch of mud was left on there since it was traded in the fall. Certified??? I’m concerned about this purchase. I’ve had a Certified Lexus that was 100% right from the day we bought it till we traded it 5 years later. Guess my expectations for this purchase were set too high. :/"
