Road Test

The new Q5's subtle redesign barely hints at the many improvements made compared with its previous generation. While the size and shape of this compact luxury SUV remain, underneath the evolutionary bodywork is a new platform. With the redesign comes a better ride, along with more space and power, yet fuel economy has also improved. As expected of a new model, lots of high-tech features have been added alongside a variety of standard advanced safety features. Taken together, it becomes one of the most well-rounded models in its class.

A new 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine produces 252 horsepower, up 32 from the previous generation. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission replaces the eight-speed automatic, and this new setup helps it get to 60 mph in a scant 6.8 seconds, while managing an impressive 24 mpg overall -- both notable improvements.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2018 Audi Q5 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"Below are a mix of the issues/functional limitations I have experienced with Android Auto: 1) Audi doesn't use touch screens and Android Auto is touch screen-centric. You can still use it, but it is less efficient and more distracting. 2) The OK Google wake command suddenly stopped working on demand. I've tried everything twice to get it back. I have to manually select the microphone to get it to work. 3) If your a podcast user, it's terrible, the only way to get to podcasts in, for example, Spotify, is to use your phone directly. Podcasts do not even show up in the interface 4) Voice commands are terrible. If you want to play a personal playlist, you can't do it. Although the materials imply you can. If you say, play playlist My songs it will try to open a song called My Songs or do a playlist for a band called My Songs"

Christopher R., WA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Apple CarPlay

"The car often displays a message that it no device is connected, even though my iPhone is plugged in and shows it is in carplay mode"

Alexander P., OH (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Apple car play constantly drops your phone so in order to use it you have to go through the procoess of unpairing your Iphone and then go through the process of pairing it again and resetting up apple car play, royal pain in the ass"

Anonymous, ON (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Stopped working. May have something to do with iPhone update. Called Audi and they never replied but Covid is happening"

Anonymous, TX (2018 Audi Q5 Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Backup or other camera/sensors

"While backing up, occasionally the car would assume that I'm about to hit an object and would react by locking my brakes in place. I am able to proceed backing up right after this happens, but it's not a pleasant experience and it is something I'm going to address with the manufacture after the stay at home orders are lifted."

Anonymous, NV (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Picture is distorted. Very hard to judge distances"

Anonymous, (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Perhaps this is not actually the backup parking camera. It has to do with the car's automatic gate opener button. It does not work when backing the car out of driveway, whereas it does work when pulling in. The dealer said this was a flaw that they were unable to fix."

Anonymous, (2018 Audi Q5 Unsure)

"Front end sensor malfunctioned causing the audible in-car warnings (beeps) to go off repetitively and frequently, even when the car was stopped."

Janice B., MO (2018 Audi Q5 SQ5)
CD player

"Badly designed in glove compartment - must park car to change CDs."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"Display screen goes completely black and shows white letter jibberish (letters don't make sense or words). This has happened 3 times in the 6 months I've owned the car; 1 when I went to start the car, and 2 times while I was driving it (1 time I was playing the radio)."

Janice B., MO (2018 Audi Q5 SQ5)

"Brought the car to the dealer several times, & they look at it & say nothing is wrong but my 2014 Q5 did never had the display screen x the route maps go black in daylight"

Anonymous, MD (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Not only the display goes blank but all electronics shutoff. System goes through a complete reboot just like when first starting the car. Only problem is I am hurling down the road at speed when all systems reboot."

Anonymous, MO (2018 Audi Q5 SQ5 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Seems as though this only happens in inclement or very cold weather.. Not sure why"

Anonymous, NY (2018 Audi Q5 SQ5)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Lots of problems - too many to describe here."

Amy W., OR (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"I can't play music form my iphone 4s as it is not supported. Rest of Infotainment system is poorly designed and not worth the money"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Connects to my iPhone but the display doesn't pop up and when I select it in the menu it still doesn't work. I usually have to plug unplug and plug the phone in a few times before it works. Also when using the phone the bluetooth connection interferes with the iphone connection and I cant hear the person I am talking to so I ususally disconnect the phone and just use bluetooth"

Anonymous, NY (2018 Audi Q5 SQ5)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"System cannot understand vocal destinations"

Anonymous, MA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Did not give me the most direct route and consistently gave VERY poor directions."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The MMI is annoying the touch pad doesn't recognize the difference between a 1 an I or an l Try entering an address with any of those letters or numbers in it and you guaranteed to get lost or extremely frustrated. Best is to just use a garmin or your phone as your navigation system because this thing couldn't navigate it's way out of a wet paper bag. Toatal crap!"

Anonymous, ON (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The GPS is very hard to work so I never use it. I use google maps instead."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"prone to glitches, doesn't operate as designed. Voice command no longer functions"

Anonymous, WA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The interface is complex and difficult to master. When I need to know where I'm going, I just use my iPhone and Siri, even though MOST of the time, if I knew how to request a destination the Audi would display my progress with a gorgeous Google Maps display (Google Maps comes and goes inexplicably. My related issue is that we've never been able to figure out how to get the car to function as a mobile internet hotspot"

James R., CA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Not able to access off grid addresses that my iPhone can find with no problem. Poor traffic control that my iPhone can direct me around. Could not direct me to a school one mile away. As this is a cloud based GPS it should be fixable."

Rachel R., CA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"System just does not work. It does not recognize my voice. It does not have the smarts to recognize where it is and local landmarks close by. In Florida, it gives suggestions in Ontario and Quebec. Driving in Albany NY, in city proper it came up with Albanei - no recognition! My friends have same problem when tried my car. I try their Acura and BMW with no problems. I've had to resort to using my cell phone for directions which has no issues with my voice and promptly provides route guidance. EVERY THING ELSE with car is FANTASTIC. Audi GPS sucks. Audi needs to license from someone who knows what they are doing. Audi suggests if voice recognition doesn't work, stop over on side of road and either punch in text character by character OR hand draw character by character your destination. This is in the same section that if the car stops for any reason, do a Fred Flinstone and push forward with your feet. This GPS non function IS a major issue with me!"

Anonymous, QC (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"After pairing with my Verizon LG flip-phone successfully for 2 months it stopped pairing and I've been unable to reconnect it, and the dealer so far is unable to fix it. The car won't pair with a Bluetooth earpiece either. For a while the car even prevented me from using my phone as a hand-held phone, though currently I can use it with a wired earpiece."

D M., NY (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Radio

"When car is started radio does not default to Preset radio stations. It defaults to whatever band was on at the time of shut down. IE: If FM was playing radio defaults to FM. If Sirius was playing it defaults to Sirius. I have to navigate to Presets every time I start the car. Very, very annoying."

Michael T., MA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The radio comes on at will. Turn it off - then it may come back on. Dealer could not find the problem more than once."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"not a failure problem but an annoying problem. radio reverts to last station chosen, and preset stations are multi-clicks to reset."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"no AM reception"

Anonymous, PA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"When radio buttons are selected often times the station will either not change or will not go to the correct station. Audi seems unable to fix it."

Rachel R., CA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Routine software updates

"After locking the car there were a number of times when I returned to find the back lid had flipped open. At my last service (10K miles) they said a software update would fix it. It has NOT - it happened again last week. This could easily lead to theft of items from the vehicle."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Software update fixes

"Check engine light came on. Software fix."

Anonymous, NJ (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Voice control commands

"It just doesn't learn to understand our voices"

Anonymous, FL (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Poor understanding of what I say. Often have to repeat command. System oftentimes never gets what I am asking for."

Anonymous, (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"User interface to navigation, phone, radio is poor including voice controls. Touch pad entry is worthless. No way to easily enter a destination address. Monitor stick out of dash is esthetically poor"

Anonymous, NY (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The voice activation for inputting an address states it's inactive, to this date Audi has not been able to repair it. Google maps turns itself off, a lot of digging through options & the manual nor the help line are of little use. The GUI is not intuitive."

Anonymous, WA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Problem with driver side window not closing all the way. Dealer replaced drive system and updated software. We also had an issue where the same window would go down when you pressed the up switch. When it got to the bottom it would then go up. This progressed into above closing issue."

"This fall for 2 mo we experienced a crackling sound in the dash. It has gone since. We are curious if it will return. Speed, or whether the air was on or off, did not matter"

Jodie R., WA (2018 Audi Q5)

"1-Rattle in Panoramic Moonroof. Dealer found loose bolt from manufacturing. Warranty repair 2-Sqeaky wipers after 2 months of ownership. Went to dealer for initial service after 7 months of ownership and dealer replaced the wipers charging me $65. Told me that the 6 month adjustment period from Audi had expired. I said I wasn't going to make apt for just squeaky wipers during this period now known to me. I appealed to Audi on their US site. They didn't come through. $50k car and Audi couldn't spring for new wiper blades."

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"There is a valve built into the compressor that controls how much Freon goes to the evaporator. after 1 hour, my AC was no longer putting out cold air. Due to Audi's stupid design, this valve cannot be replace, have to replace the compressor."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Automatic climate control

"The a/c would blow cold air through a/c vents when outside temp was 20 degrees, the temp settings would change on their own, seat heaters would come on without user input, warm air would blow out of a/c vents."

George P., MO (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, OH (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The system at times would put out cold air in the upper outer vents when in the heat mode. Also would output warm air from the A/C vents when in heating mode. Also at times the system would set the temperature setting on its own."

Anonymous, MO (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"In dual mode even if set on the same temperature the air coming out of the vents is different temperature. The system also blows a lot of air rather than colder or hotter air."

George L., GA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Blower (fan) motor

"For a while air would only come out of the dash in a particular configuration of settings that was unfamiliar. Before I could take it in the situation reverted back to expected behavior. No idea if it was something I did or a malfunction."

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"The car has been subject to three recalls. Two involved trim that could fall off. One was an electrical problem - I do not reacall the specific nature, but the dealership had to keep the car overnight to fix it."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Audi Q5 Unsure Unsure)

"Did not experience any difficulties. Car was subject to recall to correct potentially loose wheel well fittings."

Anonymous, (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Two separate factory recalls, first for the front wheel well trim, second for the rear wheel well trim. We had just moved to Montana when the first was announced. The vehicle had to be transported to the "nearest" (260 miles away) Audi dealer for a collision avoidance sensor recalibration after a minor accident, so we notified the dealership performing that service of the recall, but they "forgot" to do the recall check."

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"Factory did not properly lube the pad guides resulting in vibration & uneven pad wear and visible rotor wear on brake application (right front only). The vibration increased with mileage until car was brought into dealer for service at 11,400 miles. After much discussion that this was NOT Normal brake wear, Audi repaired under warranty. Both front rotors were replaced and caliper pad guides lubed. My experience as a automotive supplier engineer with extensive interaction with OE engineers globally as well as personal vehicle repair and maintenance history of decades may have played a role in Audi's decision to make a wear item policy exception to warranty policy."

Richard J., CO (2018 Audi Q5 SQ5 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Master cylinder

"Safety recall. I've received the notice, notified my dealership, but as yet have NOT received a return call to schedule an appointment. I think Audi is a victim of its own success. Routine service appointments sometimes have a 4 week waiting period"

James R., CA (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Parking brake

"The electronic parking brake switch malfunctioned such that it was inoperable. After repair, the switch will engage the brake, but will not release the brake."

Martin G., NH (2018 Audi Q5 SQ5 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Premature brake wear

"The brakes on the car wore out incredibly fast, had to have the pads and rotors replaced by 20K miles and within the first year of ownership! We fought with the dealership and Audi and they ended up covering half the cost (replacement of consumable items is limited to the first 12000 miles in the first 12 months). This was still a very expensive repair that seems to indicate a quality problem - pads and rotors should not be needing replacement in 12 months/20K miles."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Rotors

"We have had 4 Q5's in 5 yrs. Brake rotors rust prematurely often when sitting only a day or two, and then there is the buildup from this rust on the pads. Replacement is expensive and has never been due to pads worn out. The rotors end up with significant grooving because of the rust. This is a moneymaker for Audi to replace rotors and pads so they are not interested in a permanent or longer term solution. Also calipers have been known to seize causing premature wear. The wear light has come on with 3 or 4 mm of pad left(they checked a couple of months before it came on)."

Anonymous, NS (2018 Audi Q5 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"rotors were warped when delivered drove dealer loaner until car repaired took 30 days for parts to arrive from germany after repair car was perfect"

Squeaking

Tire pressure monitor

"TPMS alert would go off for no apparent reason."

Anonymous, TN (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"About 6 months after the vehicle was purchased, the Tire Pressure Monitor yellow icon light, plus a printed message appeared on the instrument panel, along with an alert sound when the vehicle was started. A visual check of the tires showed no deflation on any. The vehicle was taken to the dealership when it was purchased, and an assessment of the tire pressure monitor system performed. The technician reported an adjustment was made, and the system works fine. The vehicle was recalled to replace an electric part in the front, right, passenger window. That was in January, 2019. The vehicle's ADD OIL icon, alert sound, and printed message appears periodically. Once a few ounces of engine oil are added the ADD OIL alert disappears. The dealership's service technicians state the vehicle uses oil. A quart of oil is kept in the vehicle so oil may be added when the ADD OIL alert appears. Since January, 2018, two (2) quarts of the brand and grade of oil recommended for the vehicle have been added to its engine."

"tire sensor only tells that a tire is not at the set pressure, does not indicate what the pressure is (27 psi or 0 psi!). The only way to determine the extent of the problem is to stop and visually check, not good when traffic is over 70 mph."

When the opposing car finally made their turn I was then able to go. We were about 20 feet apart. This has happened twice."

Many, many times different service centers told us that computer did not indicate a problem. Finally a service person took the Q5 home overnight (with our permission) and got the same results of a malfunction warning, The vehicle was in the service center for 10 days (on this last occasion). We were told that (+/-) the entire drive train had been changed (one part coming expressly from Germany). Since then no more problems. The Continental tires are very noisy; but, the car is wonderful. We have heard this no computer problem response from Audi on the Audi S5 we also own????, also a wonderful car."

The dealership where the vehicle was purchased was contacted within 20 minutes of the warning, and the dealership requested the vehicle be brought to its service facility by the following day so that service technicians could examine the vehicle. The vehicle was delivered to the dealership service department within 24 hours of the warning. The service department determined informed that (a.) the differential needed replacing, and (b.) at least one other vehicle of the same year and model experienced the same differential problem. The replacement of the differential was covered by the vehicle's warranty, and was resolved within two days."

"Vehicle produced a check engine light under hard acceleration that cleared on restart. No change in power or fuel economy. Audi dealership diagnosed a wastegate failure and replaced the turbocharger assembly under warranty. Dealership advised the car could be driven during the few days wait for the parts to come in and performed the service in about a day. Amy W., OR (2018 Audi Q5 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Transmission computer

"On occasion the transmission/engine will stall when trying to start from a standstill. It is clearly a hesitation and when it happens it is dangerous. The dealer said they could not replicate the problem - and of course it is intermittent so no wonder. But all you have to do is Google Audi hesitation problem and I am not the first person to report this. It seems to be less likely when driving in Sport mode. I consider this s serious problem and would not buy another Q5 because of it. Otherwise, the car is fine."
