Many BMW purists are lamenting the, well, softening of the automaker's "Ultimate Driving Machine" edict in favor of more comfort, luxury, and technology in recent models. In most cases, we feel the automaker has achieved a good balance between performance and livability, but, yes, certain models are missing that razor-sharp handling edge we'd grown to expect.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 BMW 2 Series owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"Tail light connector corrosion"

Douglas S., FL (2015 BMW 2 Series 228i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Began getting failure messages on the right tail light, indicating turn signal inop, brake light inop, reverse light inop., and examination showed the lights indicated were not functioning. BMW replaced both tail light assemblies under warranty, turns out it was a design flaw. The new assemblies are a new design internally. I’ve had the new ones for about 3 months and so far they work fine."

Paul O., CO (2015 BMW 2 Series 228i xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Failure of the rear turn signal was detected by the system and I was warned about it. Warranty replacement occurred before complete failure."

Anonymous, TN (2015 BMW 2 Series M235i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Both rear tail light assemblies were allowing water to enter and becoming waterlogged. Lights started shorting out and malfunctioning. Dealer refused to replace under Certified PreOwned warranty, regular 4-year warranty had expired. Talked BMW dealer into offering warranty grace repair, since this was 3 months after 4-year warranty expired."

Kieu-Anh K., CA (2015 BMW 2 Series 228i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Keyless entry

"Comfort Key access to lock and unlock doors stopped working completely. Cannot lock or unlock with sensors. Must use key buttons. Dealer refused to repair under BMW Certified PreOwned Warranty."

Kieu-Anh K., CA (2015 BMW 2 Series 228i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Tire pressure monitor

"inaccurate"

Anonymous, CA (2015 BMW 2 Series 228i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, CA (2015 BMW 2 Series 228i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"The problem was an ABS Speed Sensor. The ABS trouble light came on about 6 weeks after the 4-year warranty expired. We took it to a non-dealer German automotive specialist for repair. They replaced the sensor and that fixed the problem."

Anonymous, NC (2015 BMW 2 Series M235i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Replaced ABS speed sensor (a month after warranty ended)."

J B., NC (2015 BMW 2 Series M235i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, WA (2015 BMW 2 Series M235i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"The rear view camera display has frozen a few times. South Bay BMW diagnosed the cause as an intermittent bad connection to the trunk closed switch and the only solution offered was to make sure the the trunk is more firmly closed."

G P., CA (2015 BMW 2 Series 228i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Radio

"Station come in and out even in good reception areas"

Anonymous, CA (2015 BMW 2 Series M235i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"Hydrolock after driving thru 8-10" flooded street. Air intake is below the bumper, poor design"

Anonymous, IL (2015 BMW 2 Series 228i xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Head gasket

"I have never had this kind of experience before in any car. One day on way home from work I had a oil burn smell inside cabin and smoke coming from hood. Called and drove straight to BMW dealer at low speed (was close). Took them over a week to fix, covered under warranty. Car has low mileage so not sure why this happened. They told me this is common after 40k miles because BMW uses a cheap plastic head gasket. My car had like 14k miles. Crazy. Not happy and never getting a BMW again."

Adrian S., CA (2015 BMW 2 Series M235i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Electrical failure

"The expander or clip on the serpentine belt broke (not a failure of the rubber/plastic material of the belt), causing the electrical system to fail. A big warning came up on the dashboard. I drove the car 2 blocks to home and parked it. It was towed to a dealer for repair"

Anonymous, NY (2015 BMW 2 Series 228i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Oil leaks

"Noticed oil leaks on garage door. Opened hood and oil had pooled on the oil filter housing. Took to dealer, they took a week to fix (super busy I guess). They replaced the oil filter but would not do a oil change. They blamed the other BMW dealer for not putting a new O-Ring on the last oil change."

Adrian S., CA (2015 BMW 2 Series M235i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
