Many people think of the 3 Series as the quintessential sport sedan. The smooth and quick 328i is a delight to drive, with a refined powertrain, agile handling and a firm, yet supple and controlled ride. Fit and finish are excellent, but the cabin is snug. A stronger engine improves acceleration and still manages good fuel economy, but seat revisions reduced comfort.

"BMWs and Minis have AC evaporators that often fail after several years (8 in our case). These evaporators cannot be replaced without disassembling and removing the dashboard and center console, and removing the steering wheel. This is two full-time days of labor for an experienced mechanic; there are Youtube videos showing this process. The repair cost is about $3500 (labor alone is $2500). This evaporator leak causes AC coolant to leak out, making the car's AC inoperative. The problem is widely known to BMW mechanics and dealers--I checked with the local BMW dealer and four independent BMW shops to get advice and estimates. The dealer and company, BMW NA, will not offer to cover part of the repair cost. This is all the result of a poor design that placed the AC evaporator in a location that cannot be repaired without extreme difficulty."
