Owner Reports

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Ride comfort, cabin quietness and interior fit and finish are all impressive. The rear seat has gained a little breathing room over the years, but it's still tight and some controls remain needlessly complicated.

"While on a trip 200 miles from home, steering system made terrible grinding sound when turning. I decided to wait 3-4 days until back home. But 2 days after noises started, it got worse and then power steering stopped altogether. Even a slight turn was like steering an 18 wheeler. I brought it to the BMW dealer where I was staying and had the worst repair experience in 50 years of driving. They wouldn't even look at it for 4 days after I brought it to them, so I had to rent a car to get home. Dealer kept the car over a month, claiming they had to send to Germany for a part. My dealer at home later checked availability and said there were several available from US distributors. Service manager was evasive and unhelpful, totally opposite from service at original dealer. Fuel pump

"Ignition Coil blew 11/17, then another 01/18. CPO warranty only covered 1 per incident & should have covered all 6. After r&r and new sparkplugs, idle kept dropping & car shuttered. No Fault Code found so BMW would not fix anything. I found HP Fuel Pump Fault code and had to prove to dealer they needed to cover it under CPO Warranty which they did. BMW Customer Relations only supports Dealers NOT Customers. Also had hardtop roof leak and they won't cover it. Should be covered as this car was totally maintained at 2 BMW Dealerships yet they would not. Porsche does cover leaks in Cabriolet roofs if maintained. BMW forces consumers with CPO Warranties to dealers for all service or CPO Warranty is voided. This is the 4th 3 Series and most expensive. My 335is Convertible has been at the dealership 8 weeks of the past 20 weeks this year! I'm done with BMW and will become a Happy Porsche Customer! This BMW 335is Convertible has devalued more than I ever imagined it would in the past 15 months. I will keep it till next year when the PrePaid maintenance expires. Hope I can get some money out this expensive to maintain vehicle. Quality and Customer Service have been forgotten by BMW engineers and service techs. Quantity is the most important thing to BMW NA and Dealerships."
