The BMW 3 Series is an excellent car that boasts high quality, attention to detail and a long list of high-tech features. Sure, it's a bit less engaging to drive than it used to be, with less tactile steering. But the car is agile, steady and well balanced, even when pushed hard. It also still delivers a very satisfying and balanced overall driving experience.

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"My 2014 BMW 328d had the EGR valve and/or cooler fail. This was the root cause. In turn this caused the intake manifold and two NOX sensors to fail. BMW has since offered an extended warranty on the NOX sensors and reimbursed the cost. BMW also has acknowledged the EGR valve or cooler problem but claims not to have a fix as of this time. Total cost of repairs was approximately $3,500 of which BMW reimbursed $550."

Charles M., FL (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"I received a check engine light that prevented my car from passing NYS inspection at about 40,000 miles. The cause was the failure of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid reservoirs or pumps. It was covered by my CPO warranty but it would have cost over $3,500 if not under warranty!"

Torsten R., NY (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Diesel DEF fluid heater failed, which required purchase of $1,000-plus part and caused car not to be able to pass emissions inspection"

Anonymous, NY (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Although covered by warranty, the diesel exhaust particulate filter and its sensor had to be replaced. In a separate instance the diesel fuel water separator had to be replaced. It was not covered by warranty."

Michael E., MN (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Dealer replaced the egr valve , egr cooler, 2 hoses and the intake header which had a leak cause by the egr failure."

Charles M., FL (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"DEA fluid ran out and the dealer took two tries and a week and a half to re program the computer and part of the emmison system. The engine was shut of when the DEA ran out and the car CAN NOT come out of PARK to move the car"

Edward H., CA (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Problem with the RMT Metering line - this affects diesel models only. I guess the urea injection sensor is what it refer to"

Anonymous, ON (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Fuel injection system

"Fuel injector #4 and fuel regulator valve had to be replaced following complete breakdown of vehicle. Vehicle stopped suddenly on a busy highway in dim morning light and could not be restarted or moved for 10 minutes or so. Finally I was able to start the vehicle and get it off the road. It was then towed to the nearest BMW dealership about 18 miles away. The 50K mile warranty had expired (breakdown occurred at 53K miles); however, BMW agreed to pay 90% of the $1800 repair cost. This was a very dangerous/unsafe situation and as a result I have lost confidence in the reliability of the vehicle going forward. Therefore, I am considering replacing the vehicle with a more reliable make (e.g., Toyota or Honda)."

Lynn W., AR (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Check engine light came on the day after the car was in for normal serviceing. It took the dealership 5 days to discover the problem was with the fuel injectors and they replaced all four"

Anonymous, NV (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Evidently related to emissions system because I've had an issue with this 2x's"

Vanessa A., TX (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Fuel pump

"Fuel pump was replaced."

Anonymous, CT (2014 BMW 3 Series 320i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The high pressure diesel fuel pump came apart as described by the dealer, causing my car to immediately stall and have to be flat-bed towed in for service. Since the fuel pump shredded metal into the fuel system, the pump, all fuel lines, the fuel tank, the injectors, filters, etc. all had to be replaced. The repairs took two weeks and the dealer confessed that book rate this would have cost around $13000. I did receive a manufacturer's extended warranty on the new fuel pump, so BMW did admit that there was a design flaw with the old pump. I must say that the repairs were covered by warranty 100% and a beautiful loaner car was given to me for the down time."

Chuck W., CA (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Car died on an open highway. Luckily, driver was able o pull off the road."

Mary S., VA (2014 BMW 3 Series 328i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Robert M., CA (2014 BMW 3 Series 335i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Fuel pump died. Had to be towed. Dealer said it was a software issue. Under warranty so no charges-just inconvenience"

Anonymous, OR (2014 BMW 3 Series 328i xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"The onboard computer indicated a problem with the sensors and that the car would be disabled if it wasn't fixed immediately. We drove to our dealership, left the car, and the sensors were replaced as extended warrantee items."

Anonymous, CA (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Caused by the EGR valve and/or cooler failure"

Charles M., FL (2014 BMW 3 Series 328d 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"We got a message on our NAV screen saying there was a problem with the urea system that feeds into the diesel emissions system. We took the car to our dealer who had the sensors replaced under warranty."

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"same comments as road noise."

Anonymous, TN (2014 BMW 3 Series 328i xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"Seal around the driver's door fell apart! Under 49,000 miles. Dealer said I put too much pressure on it when gettin in and out. (Maybe I should have alternated gettin in and out through the other 3 doors. My cost - $300 + (not covered by warranty) (never buy a BMW again - only good if you don't drive it anywhere.)"

C A., CA (2014 BMW 3 Series)

"Hard convertible top sometimes leaks in heavy rains or car wash, but just a few drops"

Leslie K., SD (2014 BMW 3 Series 335i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"It was a tire boot that was leaking...covered under warranty."

Anonymous, ON (2014 BMW 3 Series 320i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Squeaks or rattles

"The rattles are not acceptable for a car in that price range. In fact, the amount of rattles I'm experiencing isn't acceptable in any price ranges. Everything you touch squeaks caused by cheap materials. Also, turning the steering wheel makes the plastic that hides the steering column and the plastic on the steering wheel itself to squeak. There's also a lot of parts from different areas of the cabin that rattles when driving."

Charles A., QC (2014 BMW 3 Series 335i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Brakes squeak a LOT - been to the dealer twice; it is fixed for a few months and then the squeaks return. I know that high performance brake pads can cause more noise, which is fine, but these are nails-on-chalkboards squeaks."

Noam S., CT (2014 BMW 3 Series 335i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Thunking noise in front end. They cannot locate the source"

Wind noise

"very high wind/road noise that dealer said was normal because of tires which I disputed, but no further action was taken. Definitely not typical of a so called Luxury vehicle."

Anonymous, TN (2014 BMW 3 Series 328i xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"There is a constant wind noise that seems to be coming from the doors. After checking that doors are closed properly and all Windows and the sunroof are closed, the noise persists"

Anonymous, GA (2014 BMW 3 Series 335i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Extreme wind and road noise experienced in the interior. When I complained, dealer tech said typical for this model and tire. Again, not your typical luxury brand. Have experienced a decline in the quality and handling traits of newer BMW's"

"not a quiet ride on the freeway"

Anonymous, TX (2014 BMW 3 Series 328i)

"Above 30 or so mph loud wind/road noise coming from left side. Dealer says normal in this car. BMW's are supposed to be "luxury" level and this kind of noise in a $50k car is unacceptable. The 06 trade-in was no where near as loud"

Anonymous, TN (2014 BMW 3 Series 328i xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

12V power plug

"In cold weather (-20 C), a notice comes up that the battery is discharging quickly, even if being driven on the highway. The car conserves battery by shutting down things like the radio, heated seat, heated steering and navigation. It has been back"

Anonymous, SK (2014 BMW 3 Series 328i xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Alarm or security system (excluding aftermarket systems)

"The driver's side electronic lock got STUCK LOCKED and I could not get out of the car! I had to drive to the dealer (fortunately open) to get out of the car. They fixed it and it broke another part. The whole cost would have been about $4,000 (fortunately covered by warranty) Completely UNACCEPTABLE! Would never buy another BMW."

We were going to set up an appointment to remedy the situation. That did not happen. I was receiving chemo treatments and could not be going without my car for a few days. Shortly after finishing with chemo I relocated 3000 miles to Florida. I do not want to start over because they will likely tell me I let bird poop remain on the car too long all over again."

Water pump

"water pump failed at approx. 60000 miles. The pump would operate and then the car would unpredictably go into safety mode, slowing the car down on the highway or anywhere we drove. You would then need to pull over and turn off the car and restart it and could drive again (variable amount) before it happened again. Very expensive problem to fix on this car."

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Car came misaligned and we had the dealer align it. The car never felt right. It didn't have directional stability and we had to constantly correct. at 30,000 miles the tires wore out and we purchased new tires and had the car aligned again at the dealer. The car now feels better and has better directional stability. Steering is still over boosted"

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"BMW has a repair campaign going on for their 4-cylinder turbo engines, the N20 and N26 models. The root issue is disintegrating timing chain guides which, if left unrepaired, will destroy the engine. The problem will manifest itself as a whirring noise in the engine compartment which will very slowly grow over time. In my case I noticed the whirring noise and a very occasional stumbling at idle. Other than that the car drove normally. After a week or so of diagnosing, some attempted repairs, and a visit from a BMW engineer, BMW decided to do a short block replacement entirely at their cost."

Daniel N., PA (2014 BMW 3 Series 328i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Timing belt or chain

"This is directly related to my other comment about the engine short block replacement. Timing chain guides are going bad on the N20 and N26 4-cylinder engines. BMW has a repair campaign for this."
