CR's Take

It isn’t often that we use the word "versatile" to describe a sporty coupe, but that’s exactly how we feel about the new 2021 BMW 4 Series. Its two doors, optional summer tires, and twin-turbo six-cylinder engine suggest that the M440i is a sports car designed for screaming around the track. But we find that it’s equally at home eating up highway miles on a long interstate cruise—traditionally the domain of a more sedate grand tourer. The M440i successfully bridges the gap between stiff-riding two-doors meant for track days, and overdone exotics with six-figure price tags.

2021-Present

Current Generation

The redesigned 2021 BMW 4 Series shares most components with the 3 Series sedan, but they are packaged in a sleeker two-door coupe form. Two turbocharged engines are available: a 255-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a punchy 382-hp, 3.0-liter six-cylinder that uses a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup to support accessories without hurting fuel consumption. The eight-speed automatic is smooth and responsive. Rear- and all-wheel drive are available. We found the 4 to be agile and fun to drive yet refined and luxurious. The iDrive infotainment system is quick and capable but takes some getting used to. FCW, AEB with pedestrian detection, BSW, and rear cross traffic warning are all standard. ACC and LCA are optional. The infotainment system was updated in 2024 with a larger, curved display and touchscreen-based climate controls. A 2025 refresh brought styling changes and an infotainment update to iDrive 8.5.

2014-2020

2014 Redesign Year

The 4 Series coupe and convertible pack in the style, luxury, and exclusivity. This plush and comfortable line is lower and wider than its 3 Series sedan brethren. They are more of gentlemanly touring cars than a sportsters, yet they're quite capable. Handling is taut, the ride is steady and compliant, and the interior is plush. The rear seat is relatively spacious. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo is sparing with fuel; the 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo is super smooth with effortless go. For 2020, the 4 Series gets standard forward collision warning, city-speed automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane departure warning.
