The 2008 freshening of the BMW 5 Series is a mixed blessing. We really liked the new twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine, the agile handling and the improved interior craftsmanship. But the car's overcomplicated controls make living with it frustrating. Marginal side-crash-test results from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety are also not up to par for a luxury sedan.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2008 BMW 5 Series owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Accessory belts or pulleys

"The belt broke and was ingested into the engine....it was wrapped around the crankshaft. The oil pan had to be removed to get to it"

Anonymous, GA (2008 BMW 5 Series 528i 3.0-L 6 Cyl)
Engine computer

"13 of the car's 50 visits over 6 years are for "Engine Malfunction, reduced power" attributed to engine, transmission, and computer. 3 times in past 12 months. In middle of big battle with BMW corporate to be compensated for out of pockets expenses"

Scott E., CA (2008 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl)

"Reprogram required"

Anonymous, IL (2008 BMW 5 Series 535xi 3.0-L 6 Cyl)
Engine mounts

"Broken engine mounts. Very common problem according to the internet. Very expensive to fix >$1,000 and BMW refuses to acknowledge that there is a design flaw and recall. Major safety issue"

David H., TN (2008 BMW 5 Series 528i 3.0-L 6 Cyl)

"The service representative heard a strange noise when I started car to move it forward in service line and on inspection he noted one of the engine mounts had failed. This may have been existing for a long time without my knowledge and I am thankful"

"Engine Repair to replace oil pan gasket - total cost was over $1700"

John H., MA (2008 BMW 5 Series 528xi 3.0-L 6 Cyl)

"Valve cover gasket is leaking oil"

Anonymous, CA (2008 BMW 5 Series 528i 3.0-L 6 Cyl)

"very surprised an engine with less than 75K miles on it sprung oil leaks, especially since the engine has been very well maintained. The oil leak came from the oil filter housing gasket AND valve cover gasket. (seriously, multiple leaks?) Mechanic recommended that while replacing the valve cover gaskets, the actual valve cover be replaced too since it is made of plastic, and suggested we would be redoing the cover not too far in the future when the plastic finally deteriorated. That added $500 to the bill for the part alone. What is most baffling is that BMW decided to remove the oil dipstick forcing me to rely completely on electronic sensors for oil levels."

Michael P., NC (2008 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl)

"Valve cover and gasket were replaced due to oil leaking onto the exhaust manifold at a cost of $1500."

Glen R., CO (2008 BMW 5 Series 535xi 3.0-L 6 Cyl)

"Water pump cause the car to go into limp mode and needed to cool off before it could be driven to the garage for replacement."

Anonymous, ON (2008 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl)

"The design of the water pump on this model is so awful. It is hard to get to which drives labor costs through the roof. Other components must also be changed along with the water pump which also drives costs. What would be hundreds of dollars on most cars ends up being thousands on a BMW."

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Valve cover is cracked - apparently a plastic (& very expensive) part which commonly cracks"

Mark S., CT (2008 BMW 5 Series 528xi 3.0-L 6 Cyl)

"problem with valves subject to previous recall. Repair by BMW was not a full fix but they would not repair subsequent problem which was engine running rough and excessive smoking in cold weather"

Anonymous, BC (2008 BMW 5 Series 535xi 3.0-L 6 Cyl)

"BMW apparently is covering up a design flaw in certain 6 cylinder engines where the oil drain ports in the cylinder heads were made too large, which causes the oil to drain quickly from the lifters. Eventually, the lifters dry out and fail resulting in a common knocking noise. BMW has the dealers perform placebo remedies to delay the issue until the warranty period has expired. These remedies include flushing the oil system and replacement of the failed lifter (which will fail again after a period of time). By the time the knocking issue surfaces again, the vehicle is most likely out of warranty and the problem is diagnosed as a defective cylinder head which must be replaced at a cost of over $8,000. This is a very common problem and is widely described on the internet."

Edward M., UT (2008 BMW 5 Series 528xi 3.0-L 6 Cyl)

"BMW engineering/manufacturing created an issue in the cylinder head by drilling the oil ports that supply lubrication to and from the lifters too large. This results in draining excess oil from the lifters promoting premature failure and engine knock. BMW's solution was to kick the can down the road by simply replacing the lifters to get these vehicles out of the warranty period where the cost of repairs, at over $8,000, would be born by the purchaser. Needless to say, we will never purchase another BMW."
