With its space-age body, super-efficient powertrain, and laser focus on its urban mission, the i3 pushes the boundaries in automotive design. This tall, narrow, electric city car not only looks like a futuristic personal transportation pod that just drove off the set of the latest "Tron" movie, it's the first widely available car to use lightweight carbon fiber for its basic body structure.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Acceleration is very lively and for a small car with skinny tires it actually handles well. The range is very good, I've only used the REX once or twice. I get about 116 miles round trip with the temp at 80 degrees."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 BMW i3)

"Great pick up/acceleration, no lag time"

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW i3)

"The acceleration is terrific! I have a "heavy" foot and the i3 can drive on the highway at 80 mph with no effort."

Allison W., PA (2017 BMW i3)

"Its really fast"

Shawn A., WA (2017 BMW i3)

"quick and stable"

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW i3)

"This acceleration and handling of this car is impressive, I feel like I drive a concept car."

Stephen B., NH (2017 BMW i3)

"The steering is too sensative at high speeds (highway). Around town it is super to drive."

Sharon T., CA (2017 BMW i3)

"Great acceleration and maneuverability especially in town"

Anonymous, LA (2017 BMW i3)

"Accelerating is very good. I discovered that rear tires were out of alignment. Once aligned, handling is also very good."

Gary S., CA (2017 BMW i3)

"Fun to drive, like a giant electric golf cart!"

Anonymous, FL (2017 BMW i3)

"This car is really fun to drive with great acceleration and I love the quiet road noise"

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW i3)

"It is very quiet, with excellent acceleration, handling and braking. It is fun to drive, with comfortable seats. It is easy to park, has fine range, and is practical like a small SUV with comfortable rear seats that fold down, a hatch, and tall seating position."

Ron A., CA (2017 BMW i3)

"Acceleration is good, handling is good on local roads, but I don't like the handling on the highway -- doesn't feel stable, probably due to the skinny tires."

Dave S., FL (2017 BMW i3)

"The size of the i3 is great because it does not take up a lot of space (Length is ~156 inches). The low speed torque provides a lot of acceleration if needed. This car has rear wheel drive which is necessary for better handling."

Herbert W., NY (2017 BMW i3)

"I love the smooth and strong acceleration of the electric drive - also the deceleration by lifting the pedal."

Jane L., OR (2017 BMW i3)

"excellent acceleration from stop. highly refined braking"

Joe S., CA (2017 BMW i3)

"Although it is small, it doesn't feel small or unsafe when you are behind the wheel. The instant speed and the responsiveness are amazing."

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW i3)

"The i3 driving experience is not confidence building. Likely due to the narrow tires, you need to pay strict attention to what you are doing."

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW i3)

"Wish it was AWD or FWD"

Christopher S., WI (2017 BMW i3)

"like being in racing video game when driving"

Kirk P., CA (2017 BMW i3)

"Acceleration and handling"

Peter A., CA (2017 BMW i3)

"Fantastic smooth and quick acceleration, fun to drive"

Anonymous, BC (2017 BMW i3)

"Combination of strong acceleration and tight handling makes this car fun to drive at low speed and in tight spaces."

Anonymous, CO (2017 BMW i3)

"GOOD FOR BOTH"

Anonymous, VA (2017 BMW i3)

"First electric car. Fun to drive, great range. Good handling and very nimble."

Jeffrey B., WA (2017 BMW i3)

"Electric drive system is extremely smooth and feels "effortless". Acceleration around town is excellent, even though overall horsepower is not that high. Surprisingly fun to drive!"

Anonymous, NM (2017 BMW i3)

"Great acceleration and handling"

Robert M., CA (2017 BMW i3)

"Incredible smooth acceleration, very tight turning radius - great for city streets"

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW i3)

"great deal, mediocre car"

Alexander F., NJ (2017 BMW i3)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"It's too loud with the windows down. There is an air buffeting noise at high speeds (with windows down)."

Sharon T., CA (2017 BMW i3)

"seats are very comfortable and the car is pretty quiet"

Jane L., OR (2017 BMW i3)

"I love the high seat position of the i#'s seats. They're comfortable,. I can easily see the road and it's very easy to get into and out of the car."

Allison W., PA (2017 BMW i3)

"The seats are very uncomfortable for trips longer than 1 hour. there aren't enough adjustments and the seats are hard with no lumbar support. The suspension is very firm and doesn't take the potholed NJ streets kindly. The back seat isn't comfortable for 2 teenagers who now refuse to ride in the back. There's no air vents and the windows don't go down."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 BMW i3)

"seats comfortable, noise very quiet, ride choppy."

Albert F., CA (2017 BMW i3)

"Love everything about my I3"

Anonymous, FL (2017 BMW i3)

"It is very quiet, with excellent acceleration, handling and braking. It is fun to drive, with comfortable seats. I will never sell it. I love this car."

Ron A., CA (2017 BMW i3)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"For a work horse running errands car this vehicle has been fantastic. I could almost have gone without the range extender save for a few isolated needs where charging stations are not available. And because of the small wheelbase combined with choppy roads where we live it feels a little more bouncy than some may prefer. Doesn't bother me a bit, and I will more than likely get another one when the lease expires."

Matthew R., NY (2017 BMW i3)

"BMW passes through the entire EPA/Federal $7500 rebate on leases, helping offset the original price. Also, very aggressive residual value. Overall, car is a decent value given those realities. However, one should only lease an electric car, not buy one new. A used i3 could be a great deal, as their aftermarket prices are really low. A great city car if you can stand the styling."

Anonymous, FL (2017 BMW i3)

"Great value after rebates are factored into the costs"

Kirk P., CA (2017 BMW i3)

"I leased the car. Maintenance is nil. I have used about $10 worth of gas on the trip to Baltimore and back. Electric battery energy is cheaper, more convenient. ( I bought a ChargePoint charger 240 Volt) for my garage)). It is the perfect commuter car. I don't use gas to pollute the air because I don't travel outside the Metropolitan area (NY). It suits my needs, It doesn't pollute, it saves me money."

Herbert W., NY (2017 BMW i3)

"Due to incentives i ended up leasing my i3 at around $37,500USD. Which changes what I feel I get for my $ significantly. For all practical purposes I love this car, I didnt think it would be this nice, a new kind of luxury that I think opens an interesting direction. I often feel like I am driving around in a concept car. On that note, I leased instead of my normal buy-only mindset because I feared owning a two year old $40k iPod. It does have some kinks to work out for sure, but it is a wonderful driving experience for our family of 4 (and occasional dog, we actually fit). in relatively rural NH. Not dirt roads, but a town of 3000. One has to be strategic and safe because charging stations are few already but sometimes are out of service. Especially the quicker charges. Plus due to our winters at it's coldest we lose nearly a third of the battery which i's say is around 80 miles. But it does get cold here. This is one of the most fun and unique driving cars I've ever owned. It is a pleasure, a great balance of a sensible little car with an excess of power available. I somehow I feel like I am driving something between an late sities VW Beetle with the engine of a bathtub Porche. I honesty give it an A+ in the warm months. Exceptional. While I feel BMWs are normally icons of pretentious cars and owners, this one is more of a display of ability than excess. Its a extremely well thought out vehicle and I continue to notice small details from month to month. I don't feel like a jerk at all driving this car. In all black this car is not flash at first glance. But very much so at second. I've owned it for 9mo and the REX backup tank has gone down less a half-gallon. A portion of that was decided by the computer which ran the motor for maintenance and warned me on the dash display. Oh, the display. Although it is much better than many and the knob feels good in your hand, the whole BMW interface is a dissappointment. Not thought through from the perspective of a driver, Things are named and ordered in peculiar ways to assume. The i3 dash to the left is very lovely overall, well lit and relatively clear typography and logic. The backup camera can be temperamental. Yeah I really like Consumer Reports as well btw. I used you extensively when purchasing this car. I really appreciate what you folks do. You're also smart and well thought out, not overly dumbed down… and not fun to disagree with. Youve made me doubt my certainties more than a few times. Hope this rant was helpful. -S"

Stephen B., NH (2017 BMW i3)

"The most fun car to drive I've ever owned! The lease price ended up being only a little more than the Chevy Bolt and the driving and comfort experience of the i3 is completely worth the extra cost. Purchased in June 2017 - and my first scheduled maintenance isn't until Feb 2019!"

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW i3)

"Very inexpensive to run and very reliable"

Anonymous, BC (2017 BMW i3)

"free car (net of gas savings)"
