Introduction
2027 BMW i3 Returns as an All-Electric Sedan
The i3 is the upcoming sedan companion to the iX3 SUVOverview
In a world where SUVs rule, BMW’s latest electric vehicle is a sedan that reuses the name of a hatchback. But a technological showpiece is hidden beneath that traditional appearance.
The 2027 BMW i3 is the newest of the German automaker’s “Neue Klasse” EVs, which feature an electric-first design, powerful computers, long ranges, fast charging, and a renewed focus on performance. That name translates to “New Class,” and it is the same name used by the ’60s and ’70s models that defined BMW’s modern reputation. Essentially an all-electric complement to the 3 Series, the i3 follows the iX3 SUV, which has yet to go on sale in the U.S., and BMW says many more Neue Klasse models are waiting in the wings.
These vehicles are built around four high-performance computers. They manage everything related to the vehicle, from infotainment functions and driver assistance features to the drivetrain response and handling characteristics. A more efficient battery pack and dual electric motors in the i3 50 xDrive promise 463 horsepower and 440 miles of range between charges, with higher-performance models to follow.
The i3 name was most recently used on a small, innovative EV hatchback that could be equipped with a range extender for longer drives. The new model is a sedan that is sized similarly to the current 3 Series and wears a design BMW calls “familiar, yet new.” Instead of the giant grilles found on the i4 and iX, it wears a smaller “twin kidney” grill that’s reminiscent of the classic BMW 2002 and 2500.
When it goes on sale in 2027, it will likely attract some buyers away from the Tesla Model 3, as it will be one of the only smaller electric luxury sedans on the market. It will also be a serious competitor to the Mercedes CLA EV.
