Introduction
2027 BMW iX3 Has a New Platform, New Look, and a 400-Mile Range
BMW's latest small electric SUV is the first model riding on the Neue Klasse platform, which can add up to 175 miles of range in just 10 minutesOverview
The 2027 BMW iX3 isn’t just an electric version of the X3 small SUV—it’s a new start for BMW. It rides on a new platform built especially for electric vehicles, and it features a fresh design language and a completely new operating system for the vehicle itself. On paper, it’s among the highest-range EVs on the road today, with up to 400 miles of range. It all runs on an 800-volt system capable of DC fast charging speeds up to 400 kilowatts, which BMW claims can add up to 230 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging.
Only one trim will be offered when the iX3 goes on sale to U.S. customers in summer 2026: the iX3 50 xDrive, whose dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain is good for 463 hp. A second version, the iX3 40 xDrive, goes on sale in early 2027 with a range slightly over 300 miles. A single-motor, rear-wheel-drive model and other, to-be-announced versions will go on sale at a later date.
The shiny new bits aren’t limited to the drivetrain, either. The iX3 debuts a completely new electronics system that uses four high-performance computers to manage everything related to the vehicle, from infotainment functions and driver assistance features to the drivetrain response and handling characteristics. The technologies unveiled here won’t be limited to the iX3, either: BMW says that the tech used in the iX3 will be incorporated into nearly 40 other upcoming models and refreshes in its product line. BMW even named its new dedicated EV platform “Neue Klasse” after the 1960s and ‘70s models that reshaped BMW’s image. Those models brought the brand to a wider audience, and by using that name, BMW signals that it wants the iX3 and EVs that come after it to be the start of another new chapter for the brand.
Outside is a new pared-back design language with a smaller dual-kidney grille that calls back to beloved older models like the BMW 2002. If you haven’t been a fan of BMW’s big-kidney era, perhaps it’s time for some cautious optimism: This more restrained exterior design style is another thing BMW will roll out to other models soon.
It competes with the Acura ZDX, Audi Q6 E-Tron, Genesis Electrified GV70, Lexus RZ, Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, Porsche Macan Electric, and the Tesla Model Y.
It goes on sale mid-2026.
The final assembly is Debrecen, Hungary.
