Although based on the excellent BMW 3 Series, we found the ride quality in our 2004 X3 to be stiff and choppy, we suggest looking for a later model if ride comfort is an issue for you. On the positive side, the X3 has a smooth powertrain, agile handling and can tackle moderate off-road terrain. The cabin is roomy and access is easy.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"I love the handling and acceleration on this car."

P L., CA (2006 BMW X3)

"We drive winding and twisty roads to get anywhere and it is always a thrill to discover how this little luxury suv has the sole of a sports car."

PETER G., CA (2006 BMW X3)

"Incredible combination of handling and ride. Nice and stiff, especially for an SUV."

CHRIS P., CO (2006 BMW X3)

"Suv is 10 years old and stil accelerates and handles wonderful."

PATRICK C., NY (2006 BMW X3)

"I don't like driving SUV's. My wife likes to sit high up. I am amazed how well this "truck" handles, and stops. I expected the acceleration to be as good as it is (it is a BMW) I prefer cars and used to drive race cars so I like to test the limits"

VINCENT B., NJ (2006 BMW X3)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The drivers side seat heater burned a hole in the seat, (and the driver), six months after warranty out. They said it would cost $1500 to fix. They recalled and fixed the same problem for 2007's and above, but not ours."

NELL K., OR (2006 BMW X3)

"just very comfortable seats, compared any other american or asian vehicle."

Anonymous, FL (2006 BMW X3)

"The 2006 X3 is basically a sports car and as a result the ride is pretty stiff. Also, the car is a little too narrow. However, BMW has fixed these problems in the new model X3. I like everything else about the car."

WILLIAM E., AZ (2006 BMW X3)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"The x3 hauls what I need it to, feels great, drives great, but I was not informed that I was buying the only year model that took the "U(tility)" or "Activity" part out of SAV or SUV. After a horrendous experience with Uhaul and installing a trailer hitch (to do activities or us the utility part), I was told this year model (Sport pkg) is not designed to take a hitch. Epic fail by BMW in my opinion."

Anonymous, VA (2006 BMW X3)

"Cost of maintenance is horrible About 3 times higher than Lexus maintenace"

EDOUARD P., AB (2006 BMW X3)

"purchased on CPO, so good price and good value"

If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
