We liked the 2007-2013's X5's handling, smooth engine, comfortable seats and impeccable fit and finish. But overall, we think the complicated controls and stiff suspension will frustrate most buyers. A turbodiesel is available.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"This SUV is fun to drive. Acceleration is quick, transmission is very smooth and responsive, and the steering has excellent feel. Feels confident and fun in corners"

Kyle A., NV (2011 BMW X5)

"Awesome acceleration with the torque of the diesel engine pared with the size of the car and the styling is very nice. Best feature I brag about on X5s is that partial tailgate that keeps things that role around in the luggage compartment from falling out when you open the back. Never happens because BMW engineers thought of that and incorporated the 6-8" edge that can be lowered like a truck tailgate when you want!"

Anonymous, GA (2011 BMW X5)

"Fun to drive."

Anonymous, CA (2011 BMW X5)

"Acceleration and handling are quite good. There is a bit a turbo lag on the diesel. Ride is stiff but solid."

Piergiorgio B., ON (2011 BMW X5)

"excellent handling and acceleration for a SUV"

Anonymous, CO (2011 BMW X5)

"I have the X5diesel so the acceleration is slow due to the increased torque at low gears. Getting the car from 30-80mph is no problem at all. You'll barely get to 3000 rpm accelerating from 3rd to 6th. I've been told the steering wheel is stiff for the ride, but I appreciate it with the higher speeds."

Justin T., TX (2011 BMW X5)

"The handling and stability of this vehicle is just like you would expect from a German-made car that has to perform well in high speed situations like the Autobahn."

Ramtin G., CA (2011 BMW X5)

"Twin Turbo Diesel very responsive Handles very well - tight and crisp"

Frank C., TN (2011 BMW X5)

"Acceleration from the 3 litre turbo is exceptional and the brakes are top notch."

Richard G., NJ (2011 BMW X5)

"The power & torque of the Diesel engine is very well suited to move this size car in a heartbeat! Fun to drive even for a heavier car than my 3 series! I’d buy another one any day. Handling is nice too."

Anonymous, GA (2011 BMW X5)

"Engine is not as peppy as I expected. A little bit is that the lapbelt is not adjustable, so it is uncomfortable for my wife when she drives."

David M., MD (2011 BMW X5)

"It is the best handling SUV I’ve ever owned. It is very capable of towing and instills confidence when towing my 3800 pound boat."

Anonymous, OH (2011 BMW X5)

"Turning and highway driving is great. Car lowers center of gravity with air suspension at highway speeds improving handling. Seats very comfortable, Heated and A/C makes a big difference. infinite adjustments. Large cargo capacity with seats folded down."

Gregory C., PA (2011 BMW X5)

"Handles better than expected for its size and weight. Almost a sport sedan quality to it."

Anonymous, NC (2011 BMW X5)

"Handles very well. Feels well made."

Lauren H., MA (2011 BMW X5)

"acce;eration excellent"

Anonymous, CO (2011 BMW X5)

"Excellent preformance. Quality finishes. Good looks"

Anonymous, AL (2011 BMW X5)

"The vehicle was always stiff and heavy until I recently replaced the awful and expensive run-flat tires with Michelins. Now it rides like a car. Acceleration has a slight delay but when it kicks in, it flies."

PIERGIORGIO B., ON (2011 BMW X5)

"Next to my 550, this is the best handling and fastest vehicle I have ever driven."

Anonymous, GA (2011 BMW X5)

"Acceleration"

Anonymous, SC (2011 BMW X5)

"Drives like a dream. Absolutely love driving the X5."

Anonymous, MI (2011 BMW X5)

"good road feel and highway driving"

Anonymous, CA (2011 BMW X5)

"Great performance with diesel engine, acceleration is phenomenal and fuel mileage is exception for a large car. iDrive system is a joke, they should just buy a Garmin and stick it in the dash."

A G., NC (2011 BMW X5)

"Very strong acceleration and great handling for a SUV"

MICHAEL G., CA (2011 BMW X5)

"Car is easy to drive, gets good gas mileage. Comfortable interior, lots of room. I like to sit up high, especially during rainy weather, which makes driving easier."

Anonymous, OR (2011 BMW X5)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"good seats ergonomics fair"

Anonymous, CO (2011 BMW X5)

"The seats are extremely comfortable and the leather seems to be of great quality. The seat heaters are the best I've ever experienced. Road and wind noise are low and the ride is firm without being uncomfortable."

Kyle A., NV (2011 BMW X5)

"Very comfortable to drive for extended driving. Heated and cooled driver seat, heated steering wheel, massaging seats, 16 way contoured seats. Zoned climate control. Plenty of headroom."

Justin T., TX (2011 BMW X5)

"Seats hold passengers well. Feel secure. Controls are easy to reach and road noise is muffled while handling and road feel are excellent."

Anonymous, CA (2011 BMW X5)

"The seats are very comfortable! Ride and handling are great, Just what you would expect from a BMW sport sedan. Highway driving is very relaxing. can steer through turns and not notice any lean. I have a Lincoln navigator that also rides well, but requires lots of effort hanging on to the steering wheel at highway speeds in turns due to the high center of gravity. Leads to white knuckle grip on the steering wheel. In contrast, the X5 turns effortlessly and hugs the road in turns requiring no effort at highway speed. Range nearly 600 miles on a tank, makes longer trips a pleasure. MPG improves significantly at highway driving. First car I have had with auto dimming high beams. very convenient feature on back roads. Fit and finish are great on all interior details. Toggle for the Info system is the easy once one understands the process."

Gregory C., PA (2011 BMW X5)

"Sport seats are difficult to get in and force you to go up which then requires you to bend your head so you don't bang it on the top"

Anonymous, MA (2011 BMW X5)

"Run flat tires give the X5 a rough ride and are loud. The seats are extremely comfortable"

Richard G., NJ (2011 BMW X5)

"Very firm seats. Uncomfortable on long drives."

Piergiorgio B., ON (2011 BMW X5)

"Seats are very comfortable. Love the ride of the X5."

Lauren H., MA (2011 BMW X5)

"great fit for the body and great seat heater"

KEVIN K., CT (2011 BMW X5)

"Could be a better navigation system. There's no way to set routes in the system. Love the interior of the vehicle, tho."

Anonymous, OR (2011 BMW X5)

"Split open tail gate"

DMITRY M., CA (2011 BMW X5)

"Drivers seat broke down after 50,000 miles and had to be replaced. Even with a replacement seat, comfort is marginal."

ROBERT M., VA (2011 BMW X5)

"Most comfortable seats ive ever experienced the clmate control is excellent it rides quietly but its a stiffer sporty ride"

Anonymous, NC (2011 BMW X5)

"BMW does not offer adjustable shoulder belts. As a result the harness rubs into my wife's neck. We had to get an ugly sheep's wool contraption to cover the harness. In addition the car does not have power steering, which we did not know when we bought it."

DAVID M., MD (2011 BMW X5)

"A/C is very poor. It is loud and it doesn't supply ample air."

JUDY K., TX (2011 BMW X5)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"It has been nothing but trouble since the warranty expired. Have spent over $10000 over the last 18 months fixing various parts that should not have failed for a luxury vehicle. These include air suspensions and glow plugs for the diesel engine."

Piergiorgio B., ON (2011 BMW X5)

"This is an X5d or diesel. I think it's superior in most way and should be the fuel used for SUV. I generally pay less that premium unleaded by about 5-10%. Problem is every oil change the DEF must be changed. If you go to the dealership, they want $100 for the DEF! Outrageous. You must have you computer serviced for every oil change or it will tell you didn't change your DEF and the car won't start. My ERG sensor in the diesel reservoir died. Had to be replaced. $3000 from the dealer. The sens"

JUSTIN T., TX (2011 BMW X5)

"This vehicle has amazing comfort and performance, but is totally unreliable, we have broken down on 2 road trips and missed New Years Eve due to another breakdown."

BRIAN R., NC (2011 BMW X5)

"My X5 is a diesel. The vehicle is solid and agile especially now that I have replaced the useless and expensive run-flat tires which made the ride stiff. The diesel is a gem for long drives but clumsy in the city. Now that the vehicle is getting older, replacement parts are very expensive. I just spent $5000 to replace air springs and bushings and regular maintenance. I am less than impressed with the dealer service dept. I would not buy another X5."

PIERGIORGIO B., ON (2011 BMW X5)
