Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

Like many previous Buicks, the Lucerne's primary attributes are its cushy ride, along with a roomy and mostly quiet interior. While the model also has a steadier ride and better fit and finish than the LeSabre and Park Avenue models it replaced, the Buick didn't rival the best competition. Its 197-horsepower, 3.8-liter V6 engine is responsive, but sounds coarse and doesn't have outstanding acceleration or fuel economy.  Braking distances are long and the Lucerne fishtailed easily in our avoidance maneuver. Stability control is available – but only as an option, which we highly recommend.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"I really dislike ABS systems because I grew up driving vehicles without them and know the best & safest way to brake. This car is not smarter than I am, and it's like loosing control of your vehicle when ABS kicks in. I disable it; it's DANGEROUS"

Anonymous, FL (2006 Buick Lucerne CXL 3.8-L V6)

"See water pump comments."

Anonymous, OH (2006 Buick Lucerne CXL 4.6-L V8)
Engine computer

"Engine computer failed and shut down car without warning while driving 70 mph on urban highway. Power steering and brakes failed. Barely managed to return home after 30 minutes of trying to restart, which it eventually did. Had to have computer replaced at dealer for over $1000. Paid $10,000 for the car 4 years ago when it had 26,000 miles on it. I know the mechanic who serviced the car, and it had all scheduled maintenance done. Prior owner did not abuse the car. What could go wrong? Plenty. Have since spent almost $3000 on repairs. All motor mounts failed. Air suspension shocks failed. Tie rod failed. Engine computer failed. GM failed. Will never, EVER buy another GM product. Will recommend family and friends avoid GM products. They are GARBAGE. Biggest mistake I ever made in buying a car. I thought about buying a CHEVROLET Impala because of CR reviews, especially frequency of repairs (better than average), but simply cannot take a chance on another GM lemon."

Anonymous, FL (2006 Buick Lucerne CXL 3.8-L V6)

Anonymous, MB (2006 Buick Lucerne CXS 3.8-L V6)
Engine mounts

"I have replaced all four engine mounts since owning the car and replaced the front 2 mounts just this year. Used all GM parts, Buick Dealer and outside mechanic. They are very expensive with no understanding as to why they failed."

"REPLACED ALL ENGINE MOUNTS AT 60000 MILES, THEN HAF TO REPLACE ONE AGAIN AT 76000 MILES."

Anonymous, AZ (2006 Buick Lucerne CXS 3.8-L V6)

"Both front and rear motor mounts failed, even though the car had less than 30,000 miles on it. cost me over $1000"

Anonymous, FL (2006 Buick Lucerne CXL 3.8-L V6)

"Had a motor mount that needed to be replaced. The shop put in a part that was not a GM part, and it sounded like we had an exhaust leak. After checking and not finding an exhaust leak, they decided that the motor mount was not damping out vibration"

William E., ID (2006 Buick Lucerne CXL 3.8-L V6)

"We thought that transmission was the problem, but it was motor mounts broken"

Anonymous, UT (2006 Buick Lucerne CXL 3.8-L V6)

"Front engine mount failed"

Nola H., TX (2006 Buick Lucerne CXL 3.8-L V6)

"Cost around $1000 to replace all 3 motor mounts. And this on a car with 41,000 miles on it. Not a minor repair."

Anonymous, FL (2006 Buick Lucerne CXL 3.8-L V6)
Fuel leaks

"Ever since the car was a year old, there have been gas line, brake line, coolant line, and power steering line failures. The metal lines all were sub-par materials that came with the car when it was new from the manufacturer. No reimbursment from"

Anonymous, NY (2006 Buick Lucerne CX 3.8-L V6)
Oil leaks

"Engine Crankshaft seals leaking. Cadillac Northstar V8"

"Leaks from both valve cover and oil pan which require entire engine to be removed at great expense. Repairs were never made; just replace oil."

Anonymous, (2006 Buick Lucerne CXS 4.6-L V8)

"There is a slow oil leak that results in stains on the carport deck. The engine loses less than a quart of oil between oil changes at 8k mile intervals"

Kenneth A., CA (2006 Buick Lucerne CXL 4.6-L V8)

"The oil pan is leaking. The mechanic said to replace the oil pan gasket would cost about $1800.00 because of the everything that had to be removed just to get to the oil pan."

Greg P., MT (2006 Buick Lucerne CXL 4.6-L V8)

"Engine is V8. Oil leak is casket at rear of engine. I was told by Buick dealer that this was a common problem with the V8 engine. Company won’t repair because of vehicles age."

Keith M., MO (2006 Buick Lucerne CXS 4.6-L V8)
