Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2009 Cadillac CTS owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Body control module

"I drove the car and parked it. When I returned, all of the interior and exterior lights were going off and on. The door wouldn't open. I had the car towed to the dealership. The problem went away when the battery was replaced. This is the third episode."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Cadillac CTS None 6.2-L V8 supercharged)
Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"Day time running light drive's side failed. Requires removal of front bumper and headlight assembly to replace bulb. Estimate cost $200. This should be a simple owner repair"

Charles A., CA (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6 DI 3.6-L V6)

"Daytime running light bulb out. Must remove fender to replace a small bulb. Fix approaches $300 because of intensive time/labor to get at the bulb. Ridiculous engineering"

Anonymous, WI (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6 DI 3.6-L V6)

"One daytime running light went out. On any other car this is no big deal. On this car, to replace this light bulb, you must remove both front wheels, the wheel well cowlings on both sides and the front bumper. It took 5 hours. I opted to change BOTH daytime running light bulbs since I was in there. This same procedure would be required for the front turn signals and the headlight bulbs themselves. If I ever have to do this again, I will replace ALL of the lamps in there. Whoever designed this setup should be fired for stupidity, then prosecuted."

Peter H., WI (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6 3.6-L V6)

"Daytime running light on Driver side burnt out"

Richard K., OH (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6 DI 3.6-L V6)

"Daytime running light burned out - difficult to replace"

Anonymous, IA (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6 DI 3.6-L V6)

"HID daytime driving light burnt out, the bulb. It cost over $500 labour to change the bulb, you must take off the WHOLE front end to access the bulb. VERY poor engineering!"

John M., ON (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6 3.6-L V6)

"Headlight replacement originally estimated at $350 final cost $750"

W B., LA (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6 3.6-L V6)

"The lock on the driver's side rear seat will not operate with the keyless entry"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6 3.6-L V6)

"This has not been fixed as we have not gone back to dealer. The doors sometime open other times have to use key. The driver side rear door stays locked and does not unlock when buttons pushed. One has to manually unlock it from inside"

Anonymous, MI (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6 DI 3.6-L V6)

"The keyless entry keyfob was increasingly unreliable at unlocking car doors and truck throughout the year. I had the two front electric door lock actuators replaced when they failed after ~7 years service. Sometimes rain affected the unlocking. Also, the ignition doesn't always recognize that a keyless entry keyfob is present, and won't unlock the ignition (I've check 2032 button batteries with a battery checker to ensure they weren't the problem)."

Robert B., ON (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6 DI 3.6-L V6)

"Keyless entry quit working on the drivers' door only. I just use the key now for this door, I've learned too live with it."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6-L V6)

"Driver door handle had to be replaced"

Richard K., OH (2009 Cadillac CTS 3.6 DI 3.6-L V6)

If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Summary:
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 2, 2014 that they are recalling 554,328 model year 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS vehicles manufactured August 16, 2001, to April 28, 2014, and 2004-2006 Cadillac SRX vehicles manufactured March 20, 2003, to August 11, 2006. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
What should you do:
GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 15, 2014. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 14172.
