BMW is recalling more than 145,000 vehicles because their starter motors may overheat, risking a fire. The recall involves a number of sedans, coupes, and SUVs that were part of a previous recall for the same problem. While neither the automaker nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says to do so, owners may want to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the repair has been performed.

    MORE ON Car SAFETY

    The recalls includes: 2020 BMW 340i, 2020-2022 BMW 740Li, 2020-2025 BMW 840i, 2019-2020 BMW X5, 2020 BMW X6, and 2019-2020 BMW X7.

To address the problem, dealerships will replace the faulty engine starters free of charge as soon as parts are available. This recall includes vehicles repaired under recall 24V576, and owners of those vehicles will need to have them repaired again. BMW has had a few recalls for starter motor fires. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on or around Nov. 17, 2025.

The problem: An improperly manufactured starter motor could overheat and ignite sound-deadening material in the engine bay. That could lead to a fire either while the car is being driven or after parking.

The fix: BMW will replace the starter motor at no cost to the owner.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact BMW customer service at 800-525-7417.
