    MORE ON car RECALLS

The problem is with a part within the automatic transmission that could wear out prematurely, causing harsh shifts and potentially locking up the rear wheels while driving when the transmission downshifts from eighth gear.

To address the issue, dealerships will install new software, free of charge, that can detect this condition. If the software determines that the transmission part is worn out, it will limit the transmission to fifth gear. The driver will experience sluggish acceleration and notice warning lights on the dashboard until they restart the vehicle.

According to documentation provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, GM is aware of 1,888 reports of rear wheels locking up, including 11 incidents of vehicles veering off the road and/or causing property damage, and three minor injuries.

    GM Diesel Recall Details

The problem: A transmission valve may wear out prematurely, causing issues when downshifting from eighth gear. This transmission was used only on vehicles with a diesel engine, not ones with a gas engine.

The fix: A software update will limit the transmission to fifth gear to prevent the possibility of the rear wheels locking up.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Cadillac at 800-458-8006, Chevrolet at 800-222-1020, or GMC at 800-462-8782.
