Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid Minivans Recalled Again for Fire Risk

Some of these minivans have already been recalled, and they should be parked outside and not plugged in until they’re repaired

Chrysler is recalling nearly 20,000 Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) minivans because they could catch fire while parked, even if the vehicle isn’t turned on. The automaker says that owners shouldn’t plug in the vehicles or park them near structures until free recall repairs are complete.

    MORE ON RECALLS

Some of these vehicles have already had a recall repair and will have to be returned to the dealership for another fix because Chrysler found that the original one wasn’t sufficient.

The problem is partly due to damaged battery packs supplied by LG. According to documents provided by Chrysler to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there have been four injuries and several fires due to the defect. The automaker says it’s working to determine other issues that may lead to short circuiting within the battery pack that could result in a fire.

To address the problem, Chrysler dealerships will upgrade the battery pack control module (BPCM) software and, if necessary, replace the battery pack assembly. As with all recall repairs, this will be free of charge.

    The Details

    Vehicles recalled
    • 2019-2021 Chrysler Pacifica PHEV minivans built between April 30, 2018, and Oct. 26, 2021.

    • 2017-2018 Chrysler Pacifica PHEV minivans built between Aug. 12, 2016, and Aug. 7, 2018, including those that have already had recall repair 22V077 performed.

The problem: A folded or torn anode tab, along with a second unidentified factor, may lead to an internal short circuit within the battery pack and cause a fire.

The fix: Chrysler dealerships will perform a software update and, if necessary, replace the battery pack assembly free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners can call Chrysler at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign numbers: 24V536 and 24V538.
