Dodge Durango Recalled Because Spoilers Could Detach While Driving

Spoiler alert! If this part falls off while the car is in motion, it could pose a danger to others on the road.

Dodge is recalling over 139,000 Durango SUVs from the 2021 through 2023 model years because their rear spoilers may detach while the vehicle is in motion. This could cause a road hazard for other drivers.

The problem is due to a faulty batch of spoilers that stick out too far from the roof and can be struck by the liftgate when it is opened or closed. Over time, this could damage the spoiler and cause it to detach. Drivers may hear the liftgate striking the spoiler or the spoiler making a rattling noise while the vehicle is in motion. To fix the problem, Dodge dealers will replace the rear spoiler with a new part, free of charge.

The automaker already recalled just over 4,800 Durango SUVs in 2021 to fix a similar problem. The vehicles recalled today are in addition to that earlier recall.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Dodge says it is aware of more than 60 incidents of spoilers detaching from vehicles, and that there have been no crashes or injuries related to this recall.

    The Details

Vehicles recalled: Dodge Durango SUVs manufactured between Oct. 24, 2020, and Feb. 16, 2023

The problem: A faulty batch of spoilers may detach from the vehicle after they’ve been struck by the liftgate. If the spoiler detaches while the vehicle is in motion, it could create a road hazard.

The fix: Dodge dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the spoiler, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Dodge will contact owners of affected vehicles by mail starting April 14, 2023. Owners may also contact Dodge at 800-853-1403. Dodge’s own number for this recall is 20A.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V115. It is an expansion of an earlier recall, numbered 21V842.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
