Ford Escape and Bronco Sport SUVs Recalled for Fire Risk
The problem is caused by an oil leak. Owners can get a free fix at a Ford dealership.
Ford is recalling over 345,000 Escape SUVs from the 2020-2022 model years and Bronco Sport SUVs from the 2021-2022 model years to fix an oil leak that might cause a fire. Only vehicles equipped with 1.5-liter engines are included in the recall.
The problem is due to a faulty part within the vehicle’s lubrication system that could leak oil onto hot engine components and start a fire. Drivers may also notice the smell of oil or see smoke coming from under the hood.
In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford says that it’s aware of 15 cases of engine oil leaks and/or fires but that there have been no injuries or crashes related to the recall.
Ford dealerships will inspect the part and replace faulty ones free of charge.
The Details
Vehicles Recalled
• Ford Escape SUVs manufactured between Nov. 19, 2018, and March 1, 2022.
• Ford Bronco Sport SUVs manufactured between Feb. 5, 2020, and March 4, 2022.
The problem: The vehicle’s engine oil separator may crack and leak oil onto the hot engine, which could cause a fire.
The fix: Dealerships will inspect the oil separator for damage and/or leaks and will replace it if necessary. As with all recall repairs, the fix will be free of charge.
How to contact the manufacturer: Ford will notify owners of affected vehicles by mail starting April 18, 2022. Owners may also contact Ford directly at 866-436-7332.
NHTSA campaign number: 22V191. Ford’s own number for this recall is 22S21.
Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.
If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
