Honda Recalls Over a Million Minivans, SUVs to Fix Broken Backup Cameras

Dealers will offer a free fix that should also address popping and crackling sounds from the audio system

Honda issued a recall for the 2018 to 2023 Odyssey minivan, 2019 to 2022 Pilot SUV, and 2019 to 2023 Passport SUV to fix a faulty connection that might keep the backup camera from displaying an image when the vehicle is in Reverse. As a result, these vehicles currently don’t comply with federal safety standards for backup cameras.

The automaker told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is aware of 273,870 warranty claims related to this issue but that there have been no related crashes or injuries.

In addition to a backup camera image not displaying, drivers may also notice popping and crackling sounds coming from the vehicle’s audio system and speakers, or a flickering display screen. To fix the problem, Honda dealerships will replace a defective cable, free of charge.

    The Details

    Vehicles Recalled

    • Honda Odyssey minivans manufactured between Jan. 19, 2017, and June 6, 2023

    • Honda Pilot SUVs manufactured between Sept. 18, 2017, and Dec. 12, 2022

    • Honda Passport SUVs manufactured between Nov. 6, 2017, and June 5, 2023

The problem: Honda says that a connector known as the Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) coaxial cable was improperly designed and manufactured. If this cable fails to maintain a connection, the backup camera image might not display inside the vehicle.

The fix: Honda dealerships will install a redesigned MOST cable and a protective cover to maintain a proper connection. This repair will be free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Honda at 888-234-2138.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V431. Honda’s own codes for this recall are EEL and ZEM.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
