Jeep Cherokee Recalled to Fix Transmission Problems

These SUVs may not go into Park, or they could lose power while driving

Jeep is recalling over 63,000 Cherokee SUVs from the 2017 through 2019 model years because drivers may lose power while in motion or not be able to put the vehicle into Park.

    MORE ON CAR RECALLS

The problem has to do with a faulty part called a power transfer unit (PTU). A manufacturing error means the transmission could suddenly disengage. Drivers may notice a “Service 4WD” message on the dashboard and/or additional noise, vibration, and changes in how the vehicle drives.

The automaker says it is still working on a solution for the problem. As with all recalls, repairs will be free of charge at dealerships. In 2020, Jeep recalled some older Cherokee models for a similar issue.

Jeep is aware of over 1,100 reports of failures related to this issue, none of which have involved crashes or injuries, according to documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

    Jeep Cherokee Transmission Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: Jeep Cherokee SUVs manufactured between Oct. 11, 2016, and Feb. 20, 2019.

The problem: The input shaft ring on the PTU might not have been fully seated, which could lead to wear and damage that could cause the transmission to become disengaged.

The fix: Jeep is still working on a fix for this problem and will alert owners as soon as it is available.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Jeep at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign number: 25V011. Jeep’s own number for this recall is 01C.
