Kia is recalling more than 80,000 Niro EVs, plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs), and hybrid vehicles from the 2023 through 2025 model years to fix a problem with their airbags and seat belts. They may not work properly in a crash, or the side airbags might deploy when they aren’t supposed to.

    MORE ON RECALLS

The problem has to do with wiring under the front passenger seat that could be damaged during regular vehicle use. Only Niros with manually adjusting passenger seats are included in the recall. If this problem occurs, drivers might notice an airbag warning light illuminated on the dashboard.

Kia dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the floor wiring and install protective wiring covers. As with all recall repairs, this fix is free of charge.

According to documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Kia is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this recall.

    Kia Niro Airbag Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: 2023-2025 Kia Niro EVs, PHEVs, and hybrid vehicles with manual passenger seats.

The problem: The adjustment of the manual passenger seat may damage wiring on the vehicle floor, which could cause front airbags or seat belts not to work properly in a crash or may cause side curtain airbags to deploy unexpectedly.

The fix: Kia dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the faulty wiring. In all cases, dealerships will install protective covering to keep the wiring from being damaged. These repairs are free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Kia at 800-333-4542. The number for this recall is SC332.
