Almost Every Kia Telluride Recalled Because the SUVs May Roll Away When Put in Park

Owners should use the manual parking brake until they can get a free recall fix

Kia is recalling all 2020-2023 Telluride SUVs and some 2024 models because they might roll away when put in Park. A total of 427,407 vehicles are being recalled.

The problem is caused by an assembly error that may cause two important drivetrain components—the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft—to not fully engage. If this happens, drivers may also notice grinding noises, vibration, or noise when hitting bumps or turning. They may also find it difficult to shift into Drive or Reverse.

The automaker says that dealers will install a software update to automatically engage the parking brake when necessary. If there is physical damage to the intermediate shaft, dealers will replace it. Kia may also reimburse owners who already paid out of pocket for a related repair.

In the meantime, drivers should manually engage the parking brake every time they park the vehicle until they can get the free recall repair performed at a dealership.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Kia says it is aware of 16 reports of unintended vehicle movement and no crashes or injuries related to the recall.

    Kia Telluride Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: Kia Telluride SUVs manufactured between January 9, 2019, and October 19, 2023.

The problem: An error during the assembly process means the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft may not be fully engaged. Over time, this could damage the intermediate shaft’s splines, resulting in unintended vehicle movement when the vehicle is in Park.

The fix: Kia dealerships will perform a software update that automatically engages the parking brake if the shifter is in Park and the vehicle is turned off, or when the driver’s door opens in any gear. If necessary, they will also replace the intermediate shaft. As with all recall repairs, these fixes will be free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Kia at 800-333-4542.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V214. Kia’s own number for this recall is SC303.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
