Land Rover Discovery SUVs Recalled for Doors That Can Open While Driving

A faulty latch is to blame for the problem

Land Rover is recalling nearly 30,000 Discovery SUVs from the 2017 through 2020 model years because their rear doors may open while driving.

The problem has to do with water leaking into part of the door latch mechanism, which can lead to a failure over time. If the latch doesn’t work, the door might appear to be properly closed even if it isn’t. There won’t be any warning on the dashboard that a door isn’t properly latched, either.

To fix the problem, Land Rover dealerships will disable the vehicle’s keyless entry function.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Land Rover says that it is aware of 75 reports in the U.S. of doors on vehicles opening while driving, and that there have been no crashes or injuries related to the recall.

    The Details

Vehicles recalled: Land Rover Discovery SUVs manufactured between Sept. 22, 2016, and Feb. 13, 2020.

The problem: A defect may lead to water leaking into the door latch mechanism. Over time, this could lead to corrosion that may prevent the door from latching even if it is closed. If this happens, the doors may open unexpectedly while the vehicle is in motion.

The fix: Land Rover dealerships will disable the keyless entry function on affected vehicles.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Land Rover at 800-637-6837.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V393. Land Rover’s own number for this recall is N798.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
