Toyota Motor Sales is recalling more than 100,000 Lexus LX SUVs and Toyota Tundra pickup trucks from the 2022 and 2023 model years due to concerns that machining debris may be causing internal engine damage. Toyota has committed to replacing the engines in all 102,092 vehicles.

Toyota advises that owners may notice warning signs that include engine knocking or running rough, a loss of power, or a failure to start. Losing power on the road is a safety risk because it could result in a collision. Documents filed with NHTSA state: "If engine failure occurs on a hybrid vehicle, the vehicle continues to have some motive power for limited distances and the driver receives a continuous audible warning, warning lamps, and visual warning messages."

Lexus and Toyota dealerships will replace the engine, at no charge. The work time will vary by model, but the automakers estimate the labor will take 13 to 21 hours. Owners will be provided a loaner or rental based on availability while the work is being performed.

Any recalled vehicles in dealer inventory are subject to a stop sale, meaning they will need to be fixed before they are sold.

    Lexus/Toyota Engine Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: 2022-2023 Lexus LX and 2022-2023 Toyota Tundra

The problem: Debris during manufacturing may not have been properly cleaned from the engine during assembly, risking performance problems. The concern is that with some engines, debris may interfere with the operation of the crankshaft main bearings and cause the bearings to fail. The fix: Lexus and Toyota dealerships will replace the engine, at no charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Call Toyota customer service at 800-331-4331.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V381000. Toyota’s numbers for this recall are 24TB07/24TA07 and 24LB04/24LA04.
