Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS SUVs Recalled Due to a Water Intrusion Problem

An air conditioning leak risks a wet floor, short circuit, and fire

    2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV driving
    2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE350

Mercedes-Benz is recalling GLE and GLS SUVs from the 2020 and 2021 model years to address a potential air conditioning leak that could lead to a short circuit and even risk a fire.

The problem stems from a manufacturing defect that led to the air conditioning drain hoses being improperly installed. As a result, water can collect in the front footwells, causing corrosion and potentially short-circuiting electric components, thereby risking fire.

If the problem occurs, owners may notice wet carpet in the front row and/or fogged windows.

Mercedes-Benz is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this condition.

The production process was updated in February 2021, and so models built after that are not expected to have this problem. This recall is an expansion of recall numbers 21V-288 and 19V-587.

Owners will be notified of the recall in mid-May 2023.

    The Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE580
    • 2020–2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE350, GLE450, GLS450, GLS580
    • 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE53, AMG GLE63, Maybach GLS600, AMG GLS63

The problem: Improperly installed air conditioning drain line can cause water to collect on the front row floor.

The fix: The Mercedes-Benz dealership will check the air conditioning drain hoses and correct their installation, if necessary.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 800-367-6372.

    NHTSA campaign number: 23V-177.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
