Mercedes-Benz is recalling certain ML and GLE SUVs from the 2012 to 2020 model years because of concerns that water could collect in the spare tire wheel, leading to a possible fuel pump malfunction and subsequent engine stall. The recall involves 323,963 SUVs.

    more on recalls

The automaker advises that the driver may be warned of a developing problem by a damp carpet in the cargo area, the sound of water sloshing, or a check-engine light in the instrument cluster.

The company is aware of 773 warranty claims, field reports, and service reports in the U.S. since March 2019 related to this concern.

To fix this, Mercedes-Benz dealerships will look for damage, install a water drain plug in the spare tire well, and replace the fuel pump, if necessary. It will reimburse owners for related work conducted prior to the recall.

Mercedes-Benz is not aware of any deaths, injuries, crashes, or property damage claims related to this defect in the U.S.

The problem: Due to myriad factors, water can collect in the spare tire well and lead to the fuel pump failing.

The fix: Dealers will install a water drain plug, inspect for water intrusion, and replace the fuel pump control unit if necessary, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 800-367-6372.

NHTSA campaign number: 22V955000. MBUSA’s numbers for this recall are 2023010002 and 2023010003.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
