Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport SUVs Recalled to Fix Defective Keys
A faulty key may shut the car off while in motion and also turn off the airbags. The Nissan Qashqai has also been recalled in Canada.
Nissan is recalling 2014-2020 Rogue SUVs and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport SUVs with a folding ignition key. The folding key—also known as a “jackknife” or “switchblade” key—may fold while it is in the ignition, making it easier for a driver to inadvertently turn off the vehicle while it is in motion. That could cause a sudden loss of engine power, power steering, and power brakes, and make it more difficult for the driver to avoid a crash. If a crash does occur, the vehicle’s airbags would not deploy if the ignition is off.
Over 712,000 SUVs are included in the recall. In addition, nearly 100,000 vehicles have been recalled in Canada, where the Rogue Sport is known as the Nissan Qashqai.
Only vehicles with a physical ignition key are being recalled, so Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport SUVs with a pushbutton start feature are not included in the recall. A fix is not yet available. In the meantime, Nissan is warning owners not to attach any accessories to their key and use the key only while it is unfolded. Once a fix is available, Nissan dealerships will insert a spacer into the key to prevent it from folding.

The Details
Vehicles recalled: 2014-2020 Rogue SUVs and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport SUVs. In Canada, 2017-2022 Qashqai SUVs were also recalled.
The problem: The key may fold while in the ignition, which could cause the vehicle to shut off while driving. This could cause a sudden loss of power and also disable the vehicle’s safety systems—including airbags, power steering, and power brakes.
The fix: A fix is not yet available. When it is available, Nissan dealerships will insert a spacer into the key to prevent it from folding.
How to contact the manufacturer: Nissan will contact owners of affected vehicles by mail to let them know about the problem starting March 17, 2023. The automaker will send a second letter when a fix is available. Owners may also contact Nissan at 800-867-7669.
NHTSA campaign number: 23V093. Transport Canada’s ID number is 2023078.
Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.
If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
