Kia is recalling more than 462,000 Telluride SUVs from the 2020 through 2024 model years for the second time because a faulty power seat switch could cause a fire. Owners are encouraged to park outside and away from structures until a free recall repair is complete.

MORE ON RECALLS

The problem is related to another recall from 2024. An internal investigation uncovered additional issues that could lead to the seat switch failing and also found that dealerships may not have completed the original recall repair properly. Owners who already had this recall repair completed will need to bring their vehicle back to the dealership for another free fix.

The original issue was due to a seat slide knob that can become stuck when excessive force is applied to the front power seat side cover and/or the seat slide knob, causing the power seat motor to overheat. If this happens, drivers may notice that the seat slide knob sticks, limiting seat adjustment. They may also experience a burning or melting smell and/or smoke issuing from under the seat. According to Kia, the seat knob can also become stuck if an occupant hits it while getting into or out of the vehicle.

According to documents provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there have been 18 issues related to this recall, including seven under-seat fires and 11 reports of melting seat motors. There have been no reports of injuries or crashes.
