Range Rover Evoque Recalled for Faulty Airbag Light
If the light is broken, drivers may not know if the airbag is functioning properly
Land Rover is recalling 18,824 Range Rover Evoque SUVs from the 2020 model year because their airbag warning lights may illuminate even if there’s nothing wrong with the airbags.
The problem is due to onboard vehicle diagnostic software that is too sensitive. Documents provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that the vehicle’s airbags will still function even if the light is illuminated due to the software fault. However, there could be another problem with the airbags that might go undetected if the warning light is already on.
Land Rover told NHTSA that there have been no crashes or injuries related to this issue. Dealerships will update the vehicle software, free of charge.
The Details
Vehicles recalled: 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque SUVs manufactured between Nov. 2, 2018, and Nov. 12, 2020.
The problem: The vehicle’s built-in diagnostic software is too sensitive and may display an airbag warning fault even if the airbag system is working properly. With the light falsely illuminated, it will be difficult for drivers to tell whether there’s an actual airbag fault.
The fix: Dealerships will update vehicle software, free of charge.
How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 800-637-6837. Land Rover will begin notifying owners around April 14, 2022.
NHTSA campaign number: 22V080. Land Rover’s own number for this recall is N664.
Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.
If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
