Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Is Recalled for a Braking Problem

The brake pedal may require more force than expected, which could increase the risk of a crash

Toyota is recalling over 42,000 Corolla Cross Hybrid SUVs from the 2023 and 2024 model years to fix a software error that may cause drivers to lose power braking assistance if they brake while turning a corner. Toyota dealerships will perform a free software update to fix the problem. Only hybrid models are included in the recall.

    MORE ON Car RECALLS

Drivers may notice a “hard” brake pedal if braking while in a corner—in other words, the pedal will feel stiff and the driver will have to step on it harder. If this happens, the vehicle’s stopping distance may suddenly increase during braking, which could lead to a crash.

According to documents provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Toyota is still investigating whether other models have the same flaw.

    Toyota Corolla Cross Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles manufactured between June 1, 2022, and Sept. 10, 2024.

The problem: The electronic control unit for skid control within the vehicle’s brake actuator assembly has faulty software. As a result, it may not properly control brake fluid pressure, which could lead to reduced brake performance in corners.

The fix: Toyota dealerships will perform a software update free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Toyota at 800-331-4331.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V708. Toyota’s own number for this recall is 24TA11.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
