Toyota Corolla Cross Recall: Don’t Use Front Passenger Seat Until Airbag Fixed
The front passenger airbag might not deploy properly, which could increase the risk of injury in a crash
Toyota is warning drivers of 2022-2023 Corolla Cross SUVs not to allow anyone to sit in the front passenger seat until a Toyota dealership can perform a free fix for the front passenger airbag. Even if Corolla Cross owners have already been to the dealership for this recall, they might need to return for another repair due to a problem with the inspection process.
The problem is due to a manufacturing defect in a part of the dashboard that may cause the airbag to deploy improperly in a crash. The automaker says the recalled vehicles also might not be in compliance with certain federal safety standards.
Toyota dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the faulty dashboard part, free of charge. Hybrid models are not included in the recall. A spokesperson for the automaker declined to comment when CR asked whether there have been any crashes or injuries related to the recall. In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Toyota said it became aware of the issue when the supplier of the faulty part determined that the production process hadn’t been followed properly.
On Dec. 20, 2023, Toyota identified an issue with the inspection process which may have missed some vehicles that needed a new dashboard part but did not receive one. These vehicles will need to return to a Toyota dealership for another fix.
The Details
Vehicles recalled: 2022 and 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross SUVs, not including hybrid models.
The problem: The instrument panel is supposed to have a perforation that will open when the front passenger airbag deploys. However, because a supplier did not follow instructions, the perforation might not exist. As a result, the airbag could deploy in a way that it wasn’t designed to, which could cause injury.
The fix: Toyota dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace a faulty instrument panel free of charge.
How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Toyota at 800-331-4331.
NHTSA campaign number: 23V384 and 23V864
Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.
If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
