Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Recall Over 1 Million Vehicles to Fix Backup Camera

A software update should fix the issue of images not displaying properly

Toyota and Lexus are recalling over a million 2022 through 2026 Toyota bZ4X, Camry, Crown, Crown Signia, Grand Highlander, Highlander, Land Cruiser, Mirai, Prius, RAV4, Sienna, and Venza models and Lexus ES, GX, LC, LS, LX, NX, RX, RZ, and TX models. The related Subaru Solterra is also being recalled.

    MORE ON Car RECALLS

The recall is due to a faulty backup camera that may show a frozen image or no image at all when the car is in Reverse. This could increase the risk of a crash and also means the vehicles are not in compliance with federal vehicle safety standards.

Although the automakers tell the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that a software update should fix the problem, that update is not yet available. Owners will get two letters: one notifying them of the recall and another saying when they can bring their car to the dealership for a free fix.

Because federal law says that new vehicles subject to a recall cannot be sold until the recall work is completed, shoppers who are interested in some of these specific vehicles may have to wait to make a purchase. However, a Toyota spokesperson told CR that due to production changes implemented over time, only a limited number of new vehicles may be affected.

Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Backup Camera Recall Details

The problem: A software issue may cause the backup camera to display a frozen or blank image, which means the vehicles are not in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).

The fix: A free software update, which is still in development, will prevent this from happening.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Toyota at 800-331-4331, Lexus at 800-255-3987, and Subaru at 844-373-6614.

NHTSA campaign number: 25V744. Toyota’s own numbers for this recall are 25TB13 and 25LB06. Subaru’s own number for this recall is WRE25.
