Talking Cars 491: Driving the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
Plus, our experts talk about when high repair bills mean it's time for a new car, and buying cars in their first year
Main theme: In this podcast episode, we give our first driving impressions of the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. This is Subaru’s third attempt at a hybrid version of the Crosstrek, following the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid and the 2019 Crosstrek PHEV. While those both seemed like half-hearted hybrid attempts, the third time might actually be the charm.
Just as with the Forester Hybrid we’ve already tested, the Crosstrek uses some Toyota-sourced hybrid hardware to help out. It combines Subaru’s 2.5-liter horizontally opposed “flat-four” engine, a 1.1-kilowatt-hour battery pack, an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT), and standard all-wheel drive.
Our panelists delve into Subaru’s decision to keep the Crosstrek’s mechanical all-wheel-drive system—unlike most small hybrid SUVs, which use an electric motor at the rear axle. We discuss the merits (more consistent traction in slippery conditions) and deficiencies (reduced fuel economy) of Subaru’s decision to go this route.
And with about a $7,000 price gap between the Crosstrek Base and the Crosstrek Sport Hybrid (the lowest hybrid trim), we debate whether this latest Subaru is a good value.

Audience Questions
• I have a 2012 BMW 535xi with 125,000 miles. Should I sink $5,000-plus into repairs on a car worth maybe $10,000, or do you think it’s a smarter idea to just cut my losses and move on?
• I’m considering buying the new 2026 Subaru Outback. I know that CR usually recommends avoiding the first year of a redesigned model to give the automaker time to work out the quirks. But in this case, I believe the powertrains in the new model basically carry over. With that in mind, do you think it would be okay to get the 2026, or would it still be best to wait?
