With its superior ride, quiet cabin and added versatility, the Avalanche scored the highest of any pickup we'd tested during that period of time. The folding midgate gives this model flexible cargo-carrying ability. However, removing the rear window is time consuming and extending the cargo bed turns the truck into a two-seater.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Anthony S., FL (2002 Chevrolet Avalanche)

Anonymous, MT (2002 Chevrolet Avalanche)

"Poor braking system but otherwise a well engineered machine that has given me many years of driving pleasure and it's a good workhorse too.Too bad GM discontinued them. They should produce one edition every 5 years."

JAMES B., ON (2002 Chevrolet Avalanche)

"If you are looking for good gas mileage it will do ok on the road but in town it is around 11 miles per gal. Love the looks, ride and comfort."

Anonymous, CO (2002 Chevrolet Avalanche)

"Great power steering, I can use 1 finger in the spokes of the steering wheel to whip it around tight corners such as parking lots, great turning radius for its size"

Anonymous, WI (2002 Chevrolet Avalanche)

"Lots of power and excellent 4WD."

Anonymous, KS (2002 Chevrolet Avalanche)

"The 350 (5.3L) runs great even though it has over 160,000 miles, the Z71 package is well worth the money. I had to spend a little money on some suspension, wear and tear, but no trouble with engine, tranny, or rear end. I also have 22 inch tires on it. I had to get catalytic converters two years ago, but stuff wears out. Transmission never fails."

Patrick K., IL (2002 Chevrolet Avalanche)

"Big vehicle but drives like a car. V8 provides smooth acceleration."

Anonymous, WI (2002 Chevrolet Avalanche)

"Being a truck based 4wd it rides like a car."

Gary G., IN (2002 Chevrolet Avalanche)

"This is my second 2002 Avalanche, they are made on the same platform as a Cadillac Escalade, handles well, all leather, interior roomy, low noise, it is great for a truck. I would've bought a newer one, but used truck prices are crazy high as dealerships buy up private party vehicles to keep used prices artificially high. I know, I have a brother in law that perused ads for Toyota."

Patrick K., IL (2002 Chevrolet Avalanche)
