CR's Overall Mileage CR's Overall Mileage CR's overall mileage is a composite of measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course and highway cruising; and CR's 150-mile test trip of mixed driving, if tested. In recent road tests, we've discontinued the 150-mile trip test.
CR's City Mileage CR's City Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course.
CR's Highway Mileage CR's Highway Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed highway cruising.
Annual Fuel Cost Annual Fuel Cost The cost and amount of fuel used in 12,000 miles and is calculated from CR's overall mileage.
Greenhouse Gas Greenhouse Gas The Greenhouse Gas Rating represents the amount of carbon dioxide the vehicle emits compared to other vehicles of the same model year. This score from the EPA ranges from 1 (worst) to 10 (best).
Smog Rating Smog Rating The Smog Rating represents the amount of health-damaging and smog-forming airborne pollutants the vehicle emits compared to other vehicles of the same model year. This score from the EPA ranges from 1 (worst) to 10 (best).

Owner Reports

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2018 Chevrolet Bolt owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Apple CarPlay

"it froze the screen. I had to re-set my entire phone and wipe it out then re-start"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"I couldn't connect the phone to the system"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"system often freezes and won't connect to the device. Also the info displayed on the dash will be different than what's displayed on the console. Very temperamental."

Zach A., CA (2018 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Apple car play requires hard wire (not blue tooth compatible). Would much prefer GPS as part of car electronics."

Anonymous, MA (2018 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Display screen freezes up

"WHENIT FREEZES I AM NOT ABLE TO TURN OFF THE AIRCONDICIONING IF I HAVE IT OPERATION THE DAY BEFORE, I AM NOT ABLE TO TURN ON OR OFF THE RADIO, TO DISPLAY ANY OF THE OTHER FUNCTIONS THAT YOU CAN MANAGE IN THE TOUCH SCREEN"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"I had several issues that were all related to the infotainment system. Sometimes when I would start my car, the screen would be frozen on my backup camera, which doesn't allow me to control the radio volume, the climate controls, etc. since they are all controlled from that touch screen. One time this prevented me from turning off the heat when I wanted A/C. One time the radio volume was WAY too loud and I couldn't change it. I had to take my car in to the dealership several times, but they finally fixed it by completely replacing the infotainment system in the car. Since then, I have had no issues."

Anonymous, (2018 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"No really freezes, when put into gear, sometimes the screen shows the front camera even when driving. i have to reset the system then all is good. its an infrequent chronic issue."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"CHEVROLET dealer had only 1 technician qualified to fix this. Took several days to get it fixed."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Display screen goes blank

"Sometimes when starting the car the display screen does not come on or comes on only with a logo. The radio will not operate when this happens. After 3 or 4 minutes or so, the system comes on. It is almost as if it has rebooted itself. I have not yet taken this to the dealer to fix."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"The message says it is loading software while display screen is blank. Takes up to 10 minutes to start the screen with commands"

Anonymous, (2018 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Squeaks or rattles

"Creaking, squeaking noise was caused by the stabilizer bar having a problem. It was covered under warranty and they had to order parts. Took a few days, and gave us a loaner car. (not a Bolt)"

Anonymous, IL (2018 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Wind noise

"EVEN WHEN THE WINDOWA ARE COMPLETELY CLOSED WHEN I AM IN THE ROAD AND DRIVING OVER 60 M/H YOU CAN HEAR THE WIND NOISE. IT IS NOT VERY LOUD BUT IT IS THERE"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"The sensor had come off during an accident and was not replaced during the repair."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Electrical failure

"After sitting idle for 3.5 months, main battery would not charge. Not resolved after 5 weeks. I love to drive this car. It's quick, maneuvers well, looks good, roomy. Next time I will buy a Tesla model Y which is a better car."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Springs or torsion bars

"had creaking sounds like a rocking chair squeaking. It was discovered that we had to have the stabilize bar replaced and the bushings are part of that system. It was a bulletin, that they knew about?, but it wasn't a recall where they sent us anything on it. Took a few days to fix. got loaner car."

Anonymous, IL (2018 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
