    EV Battery

Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

    What Owners Say

Electric/hybrid battery pack malfunction (didn't need replacement)

"Battery limited in total charge due to recall Aug, 2021. Resolved March, 2024"

Anonymous, WI (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Could only charge to 80percent because of fire risk. Was promised a battery replacement. Instead got a software patch after years of inconvenience."

Anonymous A., IL (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"was a part of the battery recall event. Had firmware that limited range for most of the year."

Anonymous A., CA (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
    Electric/hybrid battery pack replacement

"Suddenly unable to charge big battery. Under warranty the dealer replaced it at no charge."

Anonymous, PA (2020 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Updated software installed after battery problems were ID'd for our model did find a problem and caused us to be unable to use full power. We were ale to schedule replacement and have it done relatively quickly with our local dealer. The new battery gives us more mileage per charge and reset the warranty; a double win situation for us."

Anonymous, MA (2020 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Software upgrade detected a battery problem. Car would not take additional charge. Shop had it for 3-1/2 weeks to diagnose, and eventually replace, main propulsion battery."

Anonymous A., TN (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Software glitch, computer system had to be restarted and upgraded the software to enable full driving control as designed."

Anonymous, ME (2020 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Soon after updating the software, a warning light came on and the battery would not charge. Took the car to the Chevrolet dealer and the battery had to be replaced. It took about a week to get the battery and have installed. New battery works great and does not have charge level restrictions like the old one."

Anonymous, NM (2020 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"The dealer installed recall software on my Bolt. After several weeks the software triggered an issue detected in the battery- this caused the A/C to stop running and the car unable to be charged. When I returned to the dealer, they did a further software update. again triggered the software was triggered a few weeks later and I returned with the same issues. After testing my battery they again sent me home only to have me return a few days later with the same issue. Finally they replaced my battery but it took a week in the shop. They did cover a rental car this time."

Anonymous, FL (2020 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"We had the batteries replaced due to a recall."

Anonymous, NY (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Electric)

"The dealer called and told me they had my battery recall replacement and they replaced it in one day"

Anonymous, WA (2020 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Was initially part of a recall. At some point they modified the software so that could only charge to 80% and said to keep out of garage. Next software update was said to detect battery failure and after some period of time they said battery was not defective and gave me $1400 for the inconveniance. A few months after that the battery failed, the car stopped and they replaced the battery"

Anonymous, PA (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
    Other electric/hybrid battery problem

"It looks like CHEVROLET has had to reprogram or update the software on many of their EV and plug-in hybrids. Mine presented as a battery control error warning, requiring me to take it to the dealer. The dealer looked at the message and was about to replace the battery, but then got the word from GM that they could reprogram the powertrain control module and fix it. It seems to have worked. I also got a $1400 rebate from GM, after accepting a 6k miles limitation on the battery charge. The $1400 came as a virtual credit/debit card which is very annoying to deal with. I believe they did this in hopes that most people would never use all of the cash value"

Anonymous, RI (2020 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"We were in "wait and see mode" from 2021 to fall 2023. We had to have a software upgrade that prevented us from doing a full charge during that time. Range anxiety was a real thing. We spent money on car rentals and even joined ZipCar. We joined the class action lawsuit regrading the battery problem. This has been a costly and annoying thing to deal."

Anonymous, WI (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"electric range indicator is faulty; working with GM to diagnose and fix"

Anonymous, CA (2020 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"GM didn't know which of the cars would have batteries with defects. They installed a piece of software that would test the cars while we drove them. During the testing, the range was reduced. If the battery failed, it would be replaced. If the battery passed, the range would be restored. Our battery passed. They offered us about $1000 for the inconvenience."

Anonymous A., NY (2020 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"The confusion surrounding whether the battery would be replaced or just a software update. It was frustrating to initially be told a few years ago that the battery would be replaced only to be told that a software update would correct it. This was slightly assuaged by the cash payment Chevrolet offered."

Anonymous A., UT (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

    EV Charging

Won't charge at home; won't work with some public chargers; won't fully charge; charge connection; charge port door.

    What Owners Say

    Charges too slowly

"It was a software glitch. It had to go in to ve serviced , for free . They fixed the problem and now it works fine."

Anonymous, ME (2020 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)
    Won't fully charge

"Chevrolet was supposed to replace the original batteries but then elected to only perform a software update. Since then it only charges to about 65%"

Anonymous, IN (2020 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

    Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

    What Owners Say

Fuel door or charge port door

"Port door has a plastic latch that holds it closed and alerts the car it is closed. It had been broken off and glued back by previous owner. It came off second day. Dealer fixed it but took a long time and repair shop had some communication issues. It dominated the driver information screen with the warning. It is fragile and the only poorly designed part on a really good daily inexpensive car."

Anonymous A., OH (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, USB ports, alarm or security system, remote engine start, heated or cooled seats, heated steering wheel, headlights, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, wireless charging pad.

    What Owners Say

    Wiper motor or washer

"The rear window wiper started to intermittently stick in the center position, and after a few weeks, it stopped working altogether. The local Chevrolet dealership reaplaced the wiper motor at a cost of $400, and that fixed the problem."

Anonymous A., PA (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

    Suspension/Steering

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    What Owners Say

Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"Steering rack had to be replaced. Steering response declined over the course of a month or so m, including loss of centering. Although a well-known issue in the Bolt community, repair was full price."

Anonymous, MD (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

    Electric Motor

Electric drive failure, replacement or malfunction.

    What Owners Say

Electric drive motor malfunction (didn't need replacement)

"Very hard to diagnose. Started to be a problem after they replaced the battery which failed after the recall was over but before the warranty expired. The car would knock at low speed when using the one pedal driving feature. Continued to get worse and finally became undrivable as it would automaticly put the parking brake on when stopped with the foot on the break. Has been at the dealer for a total of over 6 weeks in the last few months. Each time there is a wait for parts. Still at the dealer now for the last 3 weeks waiting for a specific part. They cannot give me any estimate of a delivery date."

Anonymous, PA (2020 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
