Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

Given its long-standing reputation as a car to be avoided, even as a free upgrade at the rental car counter, it is easy to have low expectations for the Chevrolet Impala. But the 2014 redesign dramatically transformed the model from a woefully uncompetitive and outdated offeringl into a thoroughly modern and remarkably enjoyable car. This phoenixlike rise propelled it from the bottom of our large-sedan ratings to become one of the top-scoring cars we've tested. And, in the process, it reclaimed a stature befitting its classic nameplate.

There are lots of high points here. This Impala rides like a luxury sedan, with a cushy and controlled demeanor; while delivering surprisingly agile handling, capable acceleration and excellent braking.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Chevrolet Impala owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Passenger side blight spot warning light, located in the passenger side rear view mirror stopped operating properly"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

"Forward collision sensor needed to be replaced. In addition, that sensor also impacted the lane changing warning system. I was unaware that either of these systems had failed until I nearly had an accident when changing lanes as a car was in my blind spot. I've since learned to not trust the system fully even after having it replaced"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

"The blind spot wearing sensor shorted out due to water. The parts were on back order for many weeks. It has now been repaired and working okay."

Gary O., NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

"due to salt the sensor module failed behind the rear bumper"

Mike W., ON (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
CD player

"CD player keeps rejecting CD's and will not play them. Dealer claims they are unable to duplicate problem and that CD player is working properly."

Anonymous, NE (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)
Display screen difficult to see

"When sun glare hits 45 degree navigation screen, the picture suddenly becomes invisible. This is especially hazardous when in reverse and you expect and rely on expanded rear visibility as an additional safety feature"

A S., FL (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

"It just stoped working while we were driving. When we shut the vehicle off, and then started it, it worked again."

Anonymous, MN (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"My screen just went blank 6 weeks after I purchased the car"

Anonymous, MD (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

"My wife was driving the car and the whole infotainment system went out. She called onstar and they reset it. I believe there is a software update"

Larry Z., NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

"Display screen blank for several starts then would come back. Happened 2 or 3 times. Dealer repaired (under warranty) by installing (downloading??) "update""

Anonymous, WA (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

"for some unknown reason my Mylink infotainment screen went black not blank black for about 3 days .and I was unable to use my radio or navigation system. Than after getting in my car and closing the door the screen came back to life. It has done this twice so far. I believe I have a loose connection some where in the dashboard."

John R., NJ (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

"It got fixed."

Anonymous, IN (2015 Chevrolet Impala)

"When the glare of sun hits the 45 degree navigation screen, the picture suddenly becomes invisible. This is hazardous when in reverse when you expect and rely on expanded rear visibility as an additional safety feature"

A S., FL (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Smartphone stopped working and I took it back to dealership for repair. Dealer had to reprogram the Smartphone software. Seems to be working now however it has only been about 6 weeks since repair."

John K., IL (2015 Chevrolet Impala LS 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Phone can't pair and when it is paired it uses phone instead of Bluetooth to play songs from phone"

Anonymous, MI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

"Bose system gets stuck on the last song played when car was shut off last. Car has lots of road noise which you did not offer on your noise choices. CR tests said this car was quiet, it is not! Takes the joy out of ownership. Same thing in another I"

Anonymous, MN (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

"sometimes it does not work"

Francis J., NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The MyLink system is not fully compatible with the SiriusXM traffic notification subscription as the map does not show the type of traffic (light, medium, heavy) for all roads. For example, around Baltimore MD, it will only display the type of traffic for the beltway (695). It ignores all others including 70. I've contacted both GM and SiriusXM and they blame each other. I'm siding with SiriusXM as my previous vehicles (a Ford and Chrysler) worked fine"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

"Nav system locks up after about 1-2 hours on long trips. You have to stop and shut off system for at most 10 minutes to reset nav system. Two attempts to fix failed. Cant tell if fixed until you take another long trip. Therefore it takes months for most average people to determine if fixed. They wont know until it messes up next family vacation."

Anonymous, TX (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

"The module that controls onstar and the GPS navigation did not work when we picked up the car"

Michael K., MI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

Mike W., ON (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The passenger side rear radar sensor went stopped working. The car is still within the initial 3 year warranty, however the miles were slightly over the 36,000. This sensor repair is listed at over $1,200.00, but the dealer is going to try and get GM to pay for it. While I'm waiting, the front sensor started acting up also."

Mark E., OH (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

"Both rear blind spot modules stopped working."

Anonymous, MI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

Tony M., NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
Gauges

"Temperature gauge doesn't move to changes in temp. correctly. From 187 to 211 degrees stays at same dial point"

Marvin M., NV (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

"While driving at speed, all gauges and dash display went dead. Car still operated but gauges went blank or to zero. Gauges came back, eventually but I continued to have intermittent problems with error codes related to traction control, power steering, and more; including the speedometer and tachometer fluctuating wildly while driving. Just error codes and gauge fluctuation with no apparent affect on the actual systems or mechanics - car still drove fine. After having it checked out three times but an independent shop and a dealer, it was diagnosed as a communications error between the key fob and the car. Dealer replaced the battery (one I had purchased from the same dealer less than six months previously, and the issues seem to have largely abated. I still had at least one instance of wild gauge fluctuation while driving, but nothing else."

Anonymous, MD (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
Headlights

"When head lights are used on dark nights they suddenly go out! when I manually use the control knob and change from automatic to Manuel the lights work OK, but it does get a little scary when the lights suddenly go out!!"

Herbert M., PA (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The headlights on this vehicle provide poor illumination. There is very little lighting provided to the periphery. Brightness of the headlights is very disappointing and would keep me from buying this vehicle again"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

"Headlights are inadequate and present a definite safety issue. The lights were not adjusted properly when I bought the car & it was difficult to see the road at night. I took my car back to the dealer and they adjusted the angle of the lights which improved the lighting slightly but not enough for me to feel safe driving the car at night. One night, my mother-in-law even asked my husband why he hadn't turned on the headlights because it was dark. The scary thing was that the lights were already"

Trudy W., NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

"Headlight became fogged due to condensation from water that got into the sealed compartment. This happened when I was 1,000 miles over 35,000 mile warranty so I now have to pay over $1,000 to get it fixed"

Patti-Jo A., NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala 3.6-L V6)

"One headlight kept going on and off. Replaced and problem ended. New bulbs are very, very expensive. over $200.00 plus installation. Dealership put it in and did not charge me. ."

Thomas B., IL (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

"the headlights don't shine far enough ahead. side view doesn't show wide enough and side view disappears too soon. may consider different brand because of this"

Anonymous, WI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

J S C., FL (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
Warning lights

"Passenger side blind spot monitor malfunctioned causing multiple warning lights to activate and speedometer to bounce all around. It was diagnosed as a short in the main control for the system and cost just over $1,000 to repair."

Anonymous, NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

"The side detection warning lights module has failed three times. It was covered under warranty but if it fails when not under warranty I won't replace."

"Blind spot sensors coroded and failed."

Michael K., WI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

"This is the only problem I've had to have fixed since I bought the vehicle new. The blind spot sensor in the rear driver's side bumper failed due to corrosion. The dealership recommended replacing both senseors at teh same time for a total cot of $1200. The dealership was able to get me help on the cost from GM as the car was out of warranty so the cost was about $600."

Anonymous, MI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I just received a letter from Chevrolet indicating that the problem I am having may be covered by an extended warranty. I have not yet taken the vehicle in to the dealer to be evaluated."

"System stopped functioning on both sides of the car. Required expensive repair."

Michael O., ON (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

"Has gone out on both sides. Paid almost $500 to have the passenger side replaced. Then the driver side went out. Did not repair it right away. Received notification from GM that they had experienced a lot of problems and would repair it for free, or reimburse cost if already repaired. Have waited over 2 months for the dealership to get in the part.. still waiting."

Dealership didn't cover the repair, which required a couple of new injectors, because it said it was caused by dirt in the gas. It was a $1,600 repair. Costco, where I bought the gas, denied the problem of dirt in its gas, and said it had never received that type of complaint before. Squeaks or rattles

"There is a rattle in the #2 Homelink button in the overhead console. I thought it was coming from the passenger door, so it took several months to find, by which time my bumper-to-bumper warranty had expired, so I have to live with it. The rest of the car is so quiet that the rattle really stands out and is irritating. I've heard from a Cadillac (CTS or STS, I believe) owner online, and he said he has the same issue. I bet the two cars have the same overhead console. Should't have to be scotch-taping the interior of these luxury-level vehicles."

"The 1-2 and 2-3 shift are what I'd describe as very lazy. There is a significant and noticeable lag and loss of power between shifts, especially at low speeds. Taking off from a stop, the car responds fine, then it noticeably shifts out of first gear, the car slows for a heartbeat, then second gear activates. It's a noticeable and irritating loss of momentum, to the point where my head and my passengers' heads will bob slightly at the momentum change. The dealer says unable to replicate the issue. I've never experienced this in any other vehicle with an automatic transmission. It almost feels like a manual transmission. I've used the manumatic function (or whatever GM calls it), and the same delay is present."
