Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

Given its long-standing reputation as a car to be avoided, even as a free upgrade at the rental car counter, it is easy to have low expectations for the Chevrolet Impala. But the 2014 redesign dramatically transformed the model from a woefully uncompetitive and outdated offeringl into a thoroughly modern and remarkably enjoyable car. This phoenixlike rise propelled it from the bottom of our large-sedan ratings to become one of the top-scoring cars we've tested. And, in the process, it reclaimed a stature befitting its classic nameplate.

There are lots of high points here. This Impala rides like a luxury sedan, with a cushy and controlled demeanor; while delivering surprisingly agile handling, capable acceleration and excellent braking.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Chevrolet Impala owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

“Passenger side blight spot warning light, located in the passenger side rear view mirror stopped operating properly”

Anonymous, NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

“Forward collision sensor needed to be replaced. In addition, that sensor also impacted the lane changing warning system. I was unaware that either of these systems had failed until I nearly had an accident when changing lanes as a car was in my blind spot. I've since learned to not trust the system fully even after having it replaced”

Anonymous, PA (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

“My screen just went blank 6 weeks after I purchased the car”

Anonymous, MD (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

“My wife was driving the car and the whole infotainment system went out. She called onstar and they reset it. I believe there is a software update”

Larry Z., NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

“Display screen blank for several starts then would come back. Happened 2 or 3 times. Dealer repaired (under warranty) by installing (downloading??) "update"”

Anonymous, WA (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

“When the glare of sun hits the 45 degree navigation screen, the picture suddenly becomes invisible. This is hazardous when in reverse when you expect and rely on expanded rear visibility as an additional safety feature”

A S., FL (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

“Phone can't pair and when it is paired it uses phone instead of Bluetooth to play songs from phone”

Anonymous, MI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

“Bose system gets stuck on the last song played when car was shut off last. Car has lots of road noise which you did not offer on your noise choices. CR tests said this car was quiet, it is not! Takes the joy out of ownership. Same thing in another I”

Anonymous, MN (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

“The MyLink system is not fully compatible with the SiriusXM traffic notification subscription as the map does not show the type of traffic (light, medium, heavy) for all roads. For example, around Baltimore MD, it will only display the type of traffic for the beltway (695). It ignores all others including 70. I've contacted both GM and SiriusXM and they blame each other. I'm siding with SiriusXM as my previous vehicles (a Ford and Chrysler) worked fine”

Anonymous, PA (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

“The module that controls onstar and the GPS navigation did not work when we picked up the car”

Michael K., MI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

“Soft popping noise occurs constantly during FM radio reception”

Anonymous, MI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
Steering wheel controls

“Bluetooth activation from steering wheel control did not work. Module was replaced under warranty”

Brian L., OR (2015 Chevrolet Impala LS 3.6-L V6)
Display screen difficult to see

“When sun glare hits 45 degree navigation screen, the picture suddenly becomes invisible. This is especially hazardous when in reverse and you expect and rely on expanded rear visibility as an additional safety feature”

A S., FL (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

“same”

Anonymous, MI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

“When brand new, car paired up the dealer's test phones but failed to pair on delivery to me the customer. Had to come back next day to pick up the car after they replaced the Bluetooth module”

Anonymous, AB (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

Im very disappointed in mac haik chevy dealer not repairing properly and giving me the run around. I have brought it and dealer said they noted the problem and were supposed to contact me to come in again but have not heard anything more. Anonymous, MI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
Doors or sliding doors

“Door handles do not close upon entering the car. - Now on re-call”

Eugene G., NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Glass defects

“Rear window has a smudge which I cannot clean off. Appears to be baked onto the glass, possibly from the defogger substance. Not even a sharp scraper can touch it”

Anonymous, MN (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
Seat controls - movement

“Driver seat does not tip low enough. the front of the seat hits my under thigh to the point where it can make my leg numb. I had to buy a wedge to raise my rear and relieve the pressure on my thigh”

Eugene G., NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Body control module

“had electrical issue with dash lights going out”

Mike W., ON (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Dash turns off on occasion. Appears to be a short as it then comes back on later. Dealer knows nothing as to why at this point”

Wortham A., TN (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
Headlights

“When head lights are used on dark nights they suddenly go out! when I manually use the control knob and change from automatic to Manuel the lights work OK, but it does get a little scary when the lights suddenly go out!!”

Herbert M., PA (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“The headlights on this vehicle provide poor illumination. There is very little lighting provided to the periphery. Brightness of the headlights is very disappointing and would keep me from buying this vehicle again”

Anonymous, NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

“Headlights are inadequate and present a definite safety issue. The lights were not adjusted properly when I bought the car & it was difficult to see the road at night. I took my car back to the dealer and they adjusted the angle of the lights which improved the lighting slightly but not enough for me to feel safe driving the car at night. One night, my mother-in-law even asked my husband why he hadn't turned on the headlights because it was dark. The scary thing was that the lights were already”

Trudy W., NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

“Headlight became fogged due to condensation from water that got into the sealed compartment. This happened when I was 1,000 miles over 35,000 mile warranty so I now have to pay over $1,000 to get it fixed”

Patti-Jo A., NY (2015 Chevrolet Impala Unsure 3.6-L V6)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

“front cowling was hanging down on one side, it was fixed on next service visit”

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

“Exterior molding edge on left rear door window was bent out, allowing moisture to enter the door cavity”

Brian L., OR (2015 Chevrolet Impala LS 3.6-L V6)

“Rear spoiler continues to pop loose and in very disappointed in mac hair chevy dealer not repairing properly and giving me the run around. I have brought it and they tried to repair twice but it continues to have same problem. They were supposed to contact me to come in again but have not heard anything more. The person i have dealt with is Jose Rosales (281) 596-6304 and email jrosales@machaikchevy.com”

Frederick S., TX (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)

“We had the dealer add chrome to the car on the doors that was not factory installed and the chrome and glue that holds the chrome strips keeps peeling. Consumers should only buy factory installed chrome and not the glued on strips, or they will have”

Ed K., MS (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 3.6-L V6)

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

Anonymous, MD (2015 Chevrolet Impala LTZ 3.6-L V6)
Fuel injection system

“Dirt/debris that was not filtered by the fuel filter caused engine to go into limp mode. Dealership didn't cover the repair, which required a couple of new injectors, because it said it was caused by dirt in the gas. It was a $1,600 repair. Costco, where I bought the gas, denied the problem of dirt in its gas, and said it had never received that type of complaint before. (Dealership intimated that others who bought gas at Costco around the same time would eventually experience the same problem.)”

Roger O., MI (2015 Chevrolet Impala LT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
