The Silverado hasn't changed much since its 1999 introduction and doesn't compete well with more modern designs. Its highlights include a selectable four-wheel-drive system with a full-time mode and a high payload capacity. But its powertrain isn't as smooth as some models, such as the Toyota Tundra's or Nissan Titan's. Handling was ungainly, and the ride is stiff. Interior quality is below par.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"Extremely trustworthy. It has never failed me. The ride is very comfortable."

Anonymous, OH (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The truck still handles great - no suspension parts have ever needed replacing. Acceleration is good overall, but there can be a slight hesitation with the transmission slipping in and out of overdrive around 45 mph when travelling uphill. This is probably an issue with the transmission throttle body, but I have yet to get it fixed since it only occurs intermittently. Braking is good for a large pickup, but there is an intermittent ground fault in the electronic brake control module that causes..."

What Owners Say

"Bought this vehicle new in fall of 1999 and other than normal vehicle maintenance have only had one repair (August of 2016). It's an extended cab model with V-8 motor, towing package, upgraded radio and speakers with disc player. It is the 1500 LS model and paint is still good. On third set of tires and have replaced battery once after 11 years of service."

Carol B., NC (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The 2000 Silverado was a new generation pickup for Chevy and I was hoping for improvements. I got what I hoped for. The Z71 offroad package delivered as expected, the brakes were great, the suspension and the engine were great. The truck was never in a Chevy Service bay, rather my local mechanic service ALL the mechanical needs of the vehicle. The oil was changed every 3000 miles and all the other periodic services were done as scheduled. With 198K on the odometer and having just replaced the A/..."

Anonymous, CA (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"259000 miles and still going strong. It's been an amazing truck."

James Z., OH (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I paid less than $20000 for this vehicle when new because it has very few options and a manual transmission. Therefore, the reliability has been outstanding. I just now have to replace the brake pads for the first time after 18 years. I bought it in July 1999."

R S., NJ (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Have had no problems, looks good"

Steven Q., MI (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"It is 18 yrs old. engine is excellent. It has just starting losing coolant internally. Acceleration, still very good. Handles very well for a big truck. Would buy again in a heartbeat. would most likely get another Chevy Silverado if i wanted a truck"

Evangelos S., VA (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The 2000 Chevy Silverado is great value for the money. It has been extremely reliable, and comfortable and useful for hauling. Wish it had better gas mileage, but not enough to go out an pay the ridiculous prices that are being asked for the new models."

Anonymous, TX (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Mine is a great value."

Anonymous, NM (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"It has been very cheap to maintain."

Anonymous, WY (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

Anonymous, CA (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"very little tuneup"

Kenneth J., FL (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"this truck has been wonderful since I purchased it new; although now, it does leak some oil and has a few electrical glitches. it does have over 400,000 miles on it and runs very well. Have only routine service and a couple of xxxxxx rebuilds and brakes and tires. No real complaints."

Michael H., TX (2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"good price"
