The Silverado hasn't changed much since its 1999 introduction and doesn't compete well with more modern designs. Its highlights include a selectable four-wheel-drive system with a full-time mode and a high payload capacity. But its powertrain isn't as smooth as some models, such as the Toyota Tundra's or Nissan Titan's. Handling was ungainly, and the ride is stiff. Interior quality is below par.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

What Owners Say

"4.8 liter doesn't match mileage or acceleration of 5.3 liter in my son's silverado"

Roger C., MB (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I have the 5.3 v8 and it has plenty of pep and good handeling."

Darrell G., OH (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Has 6 cyl. engine which is good on fuel mileage but not so good on acceleration."

Henry F., FL (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The acceleration stinks. This truck was bought new by my dad in 2002 and given to me in 2009 when he gave up driving. It was not a vehicle I would have purchased. I am embarrassed to driving it on the expressway because it takes forever just to get up to 55 miles. I always have to drive in the slow lane."

Mary B., NY (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The Silverado has very good power and pickup speed. The handling is good on the highway."

Anonymous, GA (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Power full .Has strong durabuilty."

Anonymous, NY (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I would purchase this truck again It accelerates well and has plenty of power for towing."

Alan H., TX (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"For the size of vehicle it handles and rides very well."

Anonymous, TN (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Handles and corners very well, but even with the small [4.3L] V-8, and new tires, it's still pretty easy to spin the rear tires when accelerating from a stop. I suspect that's mostly due to the weight distribution, which sucks in all pick-us."

Mike A., MA (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"like the acceleration if needed and handling in snow"

Alan G., MI (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"It still has great acceleration after 16 years and handles well."

Anonymous, TX (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Durability is wonderful, truck is 15 years old and still drives well without loud noises or squeaks... good truck."

Ronald N., LA (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Dependable , comfortable easy to handle , Love it !!"

Anonymous, FL (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The truck handles well and the acceleration of the V-8 is available when I need it."

Daniel S., NC (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Goes and handles surprisingly well for a vehicle of this weight and height, but the rockers have rotted out, rear wheel wells are beginning to disintegrate, rear brake backer plates almost totally disintegrated, and rust is showing up from hood to tailgate."

Mike A., MA (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The truck handles very well, acceleration leaves something to be desired especially for a V-8 engine."

Ralph F., OR (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Pick-up isn't the best, transmission shifts are hard at times."

Anonymous, FL (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The acceleration Is immediate with no lag. The handling is very good and responsive."

Anonymous, WV (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The Silverado has a very smooth ride. The stereo speakers are not that good. I've replaced them with OEM speakers twice and within a year, had the same fuzzy sound coming out of them."

Walter H., CA (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The ride is very rough. The seats are very comfortable and the road noise isn't too bad."

Anonymous, TX (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Very good seats, comfy. Very smooth axcelleration and power"

Anonymous, NY (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Handles extremely well, and accelerates with gusto. Cloth, bench, manual adjust seats are surprisingly comfortable."

Mike A., MA (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Good driving position, well-designed seats, surprisingly quiet and smooth ride (except for the minor noises and rattles that come with almost 17 years)."

Anonymous, LA (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The seats are very comfortable. The ride is excellent and is very good compared to other vehicles I have owned. There is little noise from the road and the engine."

Anonymous, WV (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Very comfortable for long trips. I love the feel. Even people who have been in this vehicle commented how good they felt."

David S., FL (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"very comfy seats, easy to adjust, rides good, interior color is a very pleasing Taupe color, no black dash, cooler inside. a bit noisy now that it is old, was not when newer. when loaded w/dirt, plants, sand, (gardening material) rides really good. been a great work/hobby truck."

Anonymous, AL (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Comfortable ride, seats are comfortable with adjustable lumbar support. Cabin noise level is acceptable especially for the age of the truck. The ride ie very smooth."

Ralph F., OR (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The bench seat in the truck is very comfortable. I have no discomfort on trips of several hours. For a truck with 175,000 miles and 17 years of age, that's pretty remarkable."

Daniel S., NC (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The Silverado has completely adjustable leather seats in both the driver and passenger seat; very comfortable. The ride is not exceptionally smooth but it is a truck and it does ride fairly smooth. It does have a great deal of window wind noise which we haven't been able to eliminate in all the years we've owned it."

Anonymous, OH (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Great truck, although I have never been a Chevy fan until now...Had pickups most of my life and did almost all of my own work up until recently...I have always had Fords and have put many miles on them with much satisfaction....But this was a deal to good to pass up,thanks to a friend....."

John R., CA (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"looks and drives great for it's age"

Alan G., MI (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Purchased new and have only had a few minor problems Have had to replace fuel pump, water pump, alternator and the AC compressor."

Alan H., TX (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Very well built pick up truck."

Anonymous, MD (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I bought it new , it has more than I needed in a pickup. It is there when I need a vehicle to haul items."

Anonymous, TX (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Despite the awful gas mileage which is the only real negative, the truck has remained solid, and only relatively minor repairs (belts, one wheel bearing, power steering, rack & pinion over a 17-year period). The cost per mile has been pretty good. It would be a good used vehicle purchase when I sell it to buy a new vehicle."

Anonymous, LA (2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)
