This version of the Silverado hadn't changed much since its 1999 introduction, so it didn't compete well with its contemporaries. Highlights included a selectable four-wheel-drive system with a full-time mode and a high payload capacity. But its powertrain wasn't particularly smooth. Handling was ungainly and the ride was stiff. Interior quality was also below par.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Engine has modified engine control chip and thus has quick revving ability. Causes tires to break loose easily. But can merge in fast traffic easily. Has broken motor mounts due to high torque."

David P., TN (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Modified the intake system, filter, intake tube, which helps air flow, which increased horsepower for better acceleration. 5.3 liter engine also helps."

Eric C., MD (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The largeness of a truck does mean it doesn't accelerate quickly but this motor's power and towing capacity make it very useful and easy to handle in the woods or on the road. I like the ride of a heavy truck-smooth and quiet."

Anonymous, AL (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Still runs very well, tailpipe is just as clean as it was when I bought it."

Marvin S., CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"good for loads"

Karen B., MI (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"ample power fro me. needed to add addition suspension for payload"

Robert B., OR (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Accelerates and drives wonderfully with Monroe Gas Matic aftermarket shocks. Michelin CAR tires of the proper size last a loooong time."

Mark P., TX (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Excellent handling"

John R., FL (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Its perfect. handles very well, it easy to drive, very comfy to sit in over long distance. Reliable. Would not buy anything else"

Anonymous, CO (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Again, handles well for a big truck. Tight enough turn to slide it into an LA-sized parking space, even in Santa Monica. Plenty of get up and go to merge on, and beefy brakes that have saved more than one Prius driver who coasted out in front of me doing 15mph in a 45. Responsive when swering when Fusion drivers coast out at 10mph."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The Silverado has tons of power and acceleration. The handling is as to be expected for a pickup truck. Turns require a large radius and pulling into narrow parking spots is very tedious."

Randy G., UT (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"hauling and towing ability"

David G., MN (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"the turning radius is way too large. makes it very hard to park and u-turn"

Scott Q., OR (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Acceleration is great, I never hesitate when getting on the freeway and reach the speed limit to merge. The smaller V8 truly handles well. I love driving my truck, hands-down! The handling is a little different then a regular car, but not by much with this truck. The ability to turn on a dime is truly amazing. In tight parking spots (i.e. San Francisco) I've never had a problem in getting out. I can literally make a U-turn in the middle of the street without needing to put in Reverse."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Durability."

Anonymous, NM (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"just all around nice to drive plenty of power good handling pulls trailer great"

Esther S., IN (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Acceleration and handling are good. This truck is often used for travelling a long distance to our recreational property and the truck handles very well at high speeds on the freeway and well as on the bumpy back roads."

Maureen J., BC (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"both good"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The truck has a lot of pep for the "small" (4.8 liter) V8, but still has decent towing and hauling capacity. The truck feels a little bit bouncy when it's not loaded, but otherwise handles very well (for a truck)."

Roger S., FL (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"both have been great"

Anonymous, ID (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Plenty of power for acceleration and hauling. Handles fine, like a pickup."

Matthew B., OK (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Performs well"

Anonymous, TX (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"like the 5.3 motor lots of pep rides nice"

Anonymous, MN (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Drives great"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Solid performance"

Ronald H., KS (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Seats have good support and are very comfortable"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"comfortable seats and nice ride"

Robert B., OR (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The driver seat has a lumbar support, which isn't adjustable. However, the ability to move the forward & backwards is manual. I believe the seats are comfortable, especially with the center portion folds down for an arm rest. When upright, it seats an addition person, it also a place for storing small things that you need to keep handy. The passenger side is exactly like the driver side. There is definitely enough power from the engine to pass other traffic, or getting on the on ramp and merging into freeway traffic. Even though it has a smaller V8, there plenty of power for the punch."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Seat vs foot pedals is too short. Lots of wind noise."

Franky L., AL (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I'm 6'7" and the seating position and cushioning are excellent."

Anonymous, MA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The Silverado is very quiet with not much road or outside noise. The seats are very comfortable for long trips. The ride is rough on bad road, but to be expected for a 4X4 pickup."

Randy G., UT (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"long distance driving"

Jack G., LA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"No road noise and comfortable seats, with plenty of leg room."

Anonymous, TX (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"It's a truck"

Karen B., MI (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I drive this truck 5 miles to work each day and half-way across the country to Texas every other month. The leather seats are comfortable, very adjustable, seat heaters work great. Seats have worn well. Just replaced driver's side. Not much road noise or "bump for a big truck, even on LA's xxxxxxx roads. Plenty of room in the back for the kids, all their stuff, sleeping bags and their 100lbs+ dog there and back to Texas."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Large, comfortable seat, room to spread out, quiet ride. Have done multiple 500 mile days without breaking a sweat or being uncomfortable."

Anonymous, TX (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Steering more nimble."

Anonymous, NM (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I believe the pickup was lowered and it had low profile tires. I felt all the bumps"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Wife like seats, ride and low noise level. Wants to drive it into the ground."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Very comfortable"

Anonymous, TX (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"This truck runs very quietly. The seats are extremely comfortable for travelling long distances and the ride is smooth."

Maureen J., BC (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"seats and suspension are not comfortable"

Judy M., ON (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"comfortable seats, no noise, smooth ride"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

What Owners Say

"great vehicle for the money"

Anonymous, ID (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"VERY dependable and reliable. A few EXPENSIVE problems were covered by GM even out of warranty like the Automatic Transmission (new not rebuilt, $4,000) and the instrument cluster, $1000). HAVE NOT HAD A BRAKE JOB YET AT 9500 MILES!!!"

Mark P., TX (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The value has been very good to date. The truck has been reliable. Rust is becoming an issue and affected the brake system."

Anonymous, MA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Very surprised and quite satisfied at overall length of time, now 14 years with no major mechanical problems. Transmission works flawlessly along with the engine and the rest of the drive train. The body has rusted out and I had the inner and outer rocker panels along with the cab corners replaced last year along with front wheel bearings and the brake lines. Overall I am very satisfied with this vehicle."

Gerard P., NH (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Auto has been very good maintenance wise for the past 14 years, Used as a truck and tow vehicle, so looks are not as important as performance. It has been good."

Anonymous, VA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Obviously since we still drive this model since it was made on 2004, we are pleased with how reliable it has been. It keeps running well so therefore increases its lasting value. Thank you Chevy for the dependability."

Anonymous, AL (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Have had less than $5000.00 in repairs, brakes, AC, steering"

John R., FL (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Got great value. V*, PLENTY of front-seat room, easy cruising vehicle for about $20K "back in the day"."

Anonymous, TX (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"it has been a great truck as to looks and features for an LS model and has always got very good mileage for a 4 wheel drive truck with no problems"

Anonymous, ID (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"We replaced the engine witg a rebuilt short block at 135k. Lifters went bad. The climate control had multiple parts replaced to keep it running. Several suspension replacements. Wheel bearings several times. Rust on the body is unacceptable - wheel wells and under extended cab."

Anonymous, IL (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"It has been used as we expected to carrying materials as needed. Has help up for our sue"

Judith G., TX (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"14 years ago, this truck was top value for the money. Powerful V-8, smooth transmission, comfortable interior, great-looking exterior styling (looks good to this day). And don't forget, the best-in-the-industry GM A/C and heat."

Anonymous, TX (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I got an exceptional deal when purchasing, and in 180K+ miles, I've only had to replace the tires. Nothing other than routine maintenance."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)
