This version of the Silverado hadn't changed much since its 1999 introduction, so it didn't compete well with its contemporaries. Highlights included a selectable four-wheel-drive system with a full-time mode and a high payload capacity. But its powertrain wasn't particularly smooth. Handling was ungainly and the ride was stiff. Interior quality was also below par.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"For everyday driving it handles well and has plenty of pickup. We tow a boat and it does really well towing."

Jim B., CA (2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Great acceleration just love it!"

Carol B., MN (2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Handling is fine as long as you understand it's a truck and not a race car. Acceleration is good enough, I bought a 6 cylinder knowing it wouldn't zoom from a stop sign. Only problem is in cruise control uphill it can't maintain speed so surges and downshifts to do so."

Tom C., NJ (2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"A very solid sure footed truck. It has been great since new."

J H., KS (2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"responsive handeling"

Lou C., CA (2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"It looks good and with 34wheel drive it handles great in wet weather. Bad manifold bolts popping off really make me angry as it is a unaddressed problem GM does not care about"

Thomas R., TX (2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"THE SILVERADO HAS GREAT PICK UP. THE ENGINE IS REAL GOOD TO HAVE OVER 120,000 MILES. ENGINE HAS NO LEAKS AND DOES NO USE ANY FLUIDS BETWEEN SERVICES."

Rexford H., FL (2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"For an older truck it still drives much like a new vehicle. The power train is still very strong."

E H., NY (2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Pricing was great for my bare bones Work Truck. expected much better in town unloaded gas mileage (actual is 13.7) highway mileage which I do very little of is about 17 mpg. Other than terrible gas mileage for a 4.3 liter V6 truck is great! in fact just passed inspection (50,000 miles and still all original brakes) !"

James M., VA (2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"has been a very good machine. lived up to Chevrolet ads."
