The Silverado, and its twin the GMC Sierra, has been a good choice for years, and the redesigned 2014 model is an even better performer. With its overhaul, this new model has landed some solid punches in the ongoing pickup wars. Handling is more carlike than in most others. The cabin is as quiet as a luxury car's.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"With the 6.2 L engine, acceleration is like a 60's muscle car! Pulls an 8000 lb trailer with ease. Fuel economy is very good, especially on the highway without the trailer. Handling is very good for a large, high vehicle."

Blair M., SK (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Nice truck except the transmission. It constantly shifts, even when maintains a constant speed. Sometimes, when starting from a dead stop, it’s as if the truck is stalling, when it’s really just the trans getting ‘confused’."

John A., CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Acceleration and towing power is great from the 6 liter engine"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"There is always a delay when trying to make a quick acceleration to enter a highway or pass another car. When the vehicle figures out you want to accelerate the engine revs and the transmissions downshifts. The result is a delayed and then a very aggressive acceleration. The acceleration is NOT instantaneous and definitely not smooth. My previous truck was a GMC Sierra 1500 with the same size engine and configuration. I loved the instantaneous and smooth acceleration."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Safety features - lane assist (very helpful on long trips). Parking assist (always on and help reminds you to keep alert). Camera - great for avoiding small things behind you. When you need to accelerate the 6.2L will do it and get it done."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Very good acceleration with 6,2 L V8 yet gets very good mileage due to the variable valve system that cuts back automatically to a V4 for fuel efficiency. Also, has lane assist which is very convenient reminder to stay in your lane or turn on the turn signals to change lanes. This feature has 3 levels of notification from high to low; yet, I like the maximum setting."

Ted F., CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Very powerful, 6.2 l, but excellent gas mileage. Average 11 l/100 on normal driving and 22 l/100 pulling 8,000 pound travel trailer."

Anonymous, SK (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"This is a thrill to drive, it has the 6.2 liter engine and 8 speed trans, with the posi-track and anti-skid system and the rest of the safety systems like lane crossing and break assist it will really make you feel safe."

William R., OK (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Towing acceleration is poor. Turning radius is better than previous models but still could be improved."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Like the handling of this truck. Very comfortable with turns as well as parking."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"More than enough power, it tows beautifully no matter the load."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Transmission on occasions does not shift smoothly"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Quick response acceleration and very easy to drive"

David S., IA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Has the bigger V-8 engine. Sounds good , outstanding acceleration and gas mileage is far superior to my older trucks...due to transmission no doubt."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I've added an air raid intake & Corsa exhaust to improve performance and mpg. Stock Z/71 suspension does an excellent job on interstate and secondary roads."

Robert W., MI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"This truck handles well and the acceleration is great - especially since it is a fairly heavy vehicle. It never hesitates if I need to get moving to merge into traffic on the highway."

Steve H., WI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The V-6 engine performs adequately and I am very impressed with the fuel mileage. Around town we average about 18 MPG and on the highway up to 27 MPG."

Jon T., AK (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Gas pedal is kind of sticky & lurches when you press on pedal. You cant ease into a gear."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The ride comfortable"

Delvin C., MO (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"It's actually fun to drive this vehicle."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Great acceration. 6 speed automatic transmission helps to achieve better gas mileage than previous truck. Slow speed shifting (<10 mph) is harsh."

Todd M., TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Plenty of power quick acceleration"

Debra M., MI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"6 cylinder engine is a wimp"

Phil K., NC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"power and gas mileage from the 5.3L engine."

Charles S., TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The acceleration is great especially getting into traffic. The turn radius as with all large vehicles is not very good. It is hard to park in small spaces especially on the right sides less you are able to swing wide."

Anonymous, SC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"This truck driver lime a super nice car but works like a truck great power"

Benny G., WV (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"acceleration is good, even when towing our boat or trailer"

Anonymous, MN (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The truck has plenty of power and runs smooth except for the engine dropping back into the 4cyl. mode and then when you give it gas it gets a little jerky."

Eddie L., KY (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Very smooth and quick aceleration and handles well around corners without drifting"

Anonymous, AB (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Pulls our 3000lb trailer just fine, however mileage does suffer (20+l/100km). Surprising cornering, brakes fine, loaded gets under 12l/100 km."

Mike T., BC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Plenty of power for anything I want to do. Great acceleration and handling."

Max L., TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"lots of power smooth shifting very stable"

Jack P., CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I chose a Six cylinder and have found it has equal ability of previous 1988 Chevy truck with a small V-8 when Pulling loads in trailer or bed. It is geared for good gas mileage. Transmission could shift sooner at slow speeds in some situations. Most impressed with gas mileage. It is a smooth quiet ride on smooth surface roads. It does not handle bumps well. It is jumpy and rough riding when pavement is imperfect. It does take curves well, but I mind my speed. I need to allow more distance for stopping. Wish it was more streamlined for highway speeds and for head winds. I don't need the skin on the truck to be as big as it is. It is unnecessarily oversized, perhaps to appeal to those seeking macho in a vehicle. It reminds me of a Superman with fake muscles. I wish my work truck had better interior cab lights. I wish the regular cab had a tad more room to push seat back further. I am comfortable as is for long rides, even though I am long legged and 6' tall. Would like some extra space to have that option.."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"the pickup has the 5.3 liter engine and handles acceleration well even when pulling a 4000 lb trailer. The truck corners well too. The Hill braking assist feature is nice for going down hill or on a steep incline when at a stop light."

Tom S., OR (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"6.2 is very powerful and fun to drive"

Anonymous, NE (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The transmission does not smoothly shift between 1st and 2nd while going slow, the first time I noticed it I thought someone had hit me from behind, it was so hard, the dealer said they could not find an issue with it."

Anonymous, HI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Drives as comfortably as a luxury automobile. Great acceleration, my hybrid fuel Silverado, gets good mileage also!"

Wanda V., FL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Good, mileage could be better"

Paul-Kari M., WI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Best engine in its class...super quick when you need. Very powerful but efficient."

Martin G., ON (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The acceleration under load has been erratic. All dealer checks indicate “no problem “. But there is a problem."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The vehicle has great power and torque for towing heavy loads. Smooth ride in all conditions."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"When I need to pass another vehicle on the highway, my Silverado has no problem. The acceleration is great."

Henry E., TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The truck has very good acceleration and handles well on the highway and on rough terrain."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The engine is very powerful, it accelerates better than I expected. It handles like a sports car."

Douglas Q., OR (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I lease a Silverado 1500 LTZ (premium trim) with the 5.3 liter V8 with the 6 speed transmission. It also has a 3:42 rear for fuel economy which with combined city/highway delivers nearly 19 mpg overall in 20,000 miles of driving (22.7 mpg highway). But there is a penalty for the higher mileage, lackluster acceleration both off the line and in passing. As for passing I largely attribute that to the reluctance of the 6 speed trans to downshift, often requiring going to manual mode. The V4 to V8 changeover is seamless, although in V4 operation I can sometimes sense the engine "lugging" before a change. Both are minor tradeoffs for better than average fuel economy. A few comments beyond the above. The headlights are abysmal, particularly the high beams which are weak and blotchy. Braking is adequate but for short stops require considerable pressure on the pedal. There is no way to use a locking gas cap as the filler only has a spring loaded flap. On the plus side, for a truck, the ride is not bad, the cabin is whisper quiet, the appointments rival that of luxury cars, My link is easy to learn and use, loads of leg and head, 10 way power heated and cooled front seats make for ease of finding comfortable seating. Center console has plenty of outlets (120 volt, 12 volt and UBS). Console holds a full size box of tissues (great for young children and adults with allergies). Center console holds file folders. Crew cab offers plenty of room for rear passengers but without separate A/C control. A/C and heat are powerful but deliver somewhat uneven results. Separate digital and analog controls are a plus.. Having just returned from a 1000 mile vacation I can say the Silverado provides an overall pleasant and predictable driving experience. Despite some misgivings as outlined above, I would definitely buy or lease a new one when the lease is up,"

Robert M., NJ (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"This truck has plenty of power and handles well in traffic. As with most four wheel drive, it is a little top heavy."

Ron S., KY (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The acceleration is very good for a larger truck and it doesn't take long to get up to speed when entering a freeway. The handling is very good on the highway and in a heavy rain. Have not had a chance yet to try it off-road."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The 6.2L engine is awesome, very good on gas on highway. 9.6l/100km for 420hp motor"

Sylvain G., ON (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The V-8 engine and eight speed transmission are wonderful."

Scott H., NC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"V-8 with 6-speed transmission is very peppy and smooth."

Fred K., CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"great acceleration and handling"

Nicholas F., CT (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The truck hadles well particularly in bad weather. I am an avid skiier and have driven it to and from mountains in blizzard conditions. It does not get stuck heavy snow and drives very stable and predictable in such conditions. Im seeing SUVs sliding off the road. The Silverado doesn't even hint at the possibility that could happen. The wipers are another story. They ice over very badly limiting vision and requiring i manually remove acumuclated ice by rollling down the window while driving. Not..."

Comfort

What Owners Say

"Is very noisy due to type of tires."

"I have the High Country model and the seats and steering are perfect."

Terry M., MI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Drivers seat is uncomfortable. It curves my shoulders forward. Being that my shoulders are fairly broad this causes pain in my shoulders and between my shoulder blades on a long trip. There is no vehicle provided adjustment that I've found to be comfortable. The only solution is a seat cushion that supports the middle of my back and between my shoulders."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

John W., TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I don’t think that the seats are as comfortable as those in the Yukon or Tahoe I owned previously as far as seat adjustment and how they seem to support and fit my back. I do, however, appreciate the air cooled, vented seats."

Anonymous, UT (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"Surprisingly the 1500 has a very smooth ride, is quiet, and the seats are comfortable for cloth seats. The interior is constructed well and easy to accommodate six people."

Anonymous, SK (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"This truck is much quieter and the seats are much more comfortable than the 2013 Silverado it replaced. We have taken it on cross country trips and it is just as comfortable as our sedan."

James M., WI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The seats fit me great and don't bind me any where. The looks are also great , I bought the All Star model and most everything is the same color Pepper Dust. The only bad thing is the black cloth seats. They are hard to keep clean and thinking about seat covers."

Gene P., NE (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

Anonymous, FL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"The fact that both driver and passenger seats are fully adjustable (especially lumber and heated seats), was a huge selling point. The ride is extremely comfortable due to being able to adjust the seats at various times during a trip which eases fatigue later on."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"For a truck I love the ride and comfort of the seats and all controls that go along with it."

Eddie L., KY (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I have the 12 way power adjust driver seat, power adjust pedals and steering and it is by far the worst, most uncomfortable vehicle seat I have ever owned. In 2 years I have failed to find a comfort zone. Seats are very rigid and hard makes long trips almost out of the question. Seats hard, to sit to low (like a sand chair at the beach), can't sit high enough to see over hood. I am 5'8" so not overly short, just over all not the quality or comfort expected for the upgraded seats."

Debra M., MI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"There isn't enough lumbar support in the passenger seat for my preference. No adjustment.."

Leah R., KY (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

"I have a nearly top-of-the-line LTZ model. While I love the perforated ventilated front seats, a HUGE demerit is the fact that there are no A/C outlets at mid or upper level for rear seat passengers. GM chose to cut costs with the wrong items. Having said that, this is the quietest vehicle I have ever owned and these are among the best seats I have ever used."
