The Volt is an electric car for drivers who don't want to be limited by battery range. It usually allows you to drive gas-free for 35 miles, however the exact number depends on weather and driving style. In our testing, it ranged from 20 to 50 miles. When the battery is depleted, a backup gasoline engine kicks in to keep the electric motor running. This allows you to keep driving for up to 315 more miles before refueling.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Electric power is fun to drive"

Anonymous, TX (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"Great mileage, driving experience, acceleration, interior room, quiet all good"

STAYCEE M., AR (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"The electric driving experience is really nice. Less noice and a very smooth acceleration."

IVAN G., TN (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"The Volt has instantly available torque from the electric motor and the one speed transmission, which is useful in traffic and fun to drive. The (significant) weight of the battery keeps weight low, and cornering is flat and predictable."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"The driving experience is superior to both the 2005 & 2010 Toyota Prius I have previously owned. Downside is this car is not as practical and versatile as the Toyota's."

DIRK D., KS (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"Driving to Vegas, the gas motor couldn't handle the climb up the mountains and I could not travel greater than 50 mph in a 70mph zone."

W P., CA (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"The Volt has excellent acceleration, both on battery and on engine backup. It holds the road well and has good traction in winter conditions, even without all wheel drive."

ARTHUR C., MI (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"No vibration from engine, no shifting from transmission, only quietness"

GREGOIRE B., QC (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"In "sport" mode it has tremendous instant acceleration which makes merging into traffic safer."

WALTER S., MI (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"Electric power provides very quick and quiet acceleration. Charging at home is very convenient for refueling."

DANE S., CA (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Well built, quiet. Front seats are comfortable, back seats are uncomfortable. Ride is smooth, heating and cooling is adequate but lowers fuel economy"

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"The 2012 Volt is very comfortable as a rear seat passenger. The rear seat has very little leg room and the I have had issues with the head room getting into the vehicle. It would be much nicer for the rear seat to have a bench seat and fold up back rest/arm rest for the middle passenger, if there was a bench in back."

GREG R., OR (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"can't adjust the rear view mirror to see clearly behind me. If I was any taller (5'10") I wouldn't be able to use the car at all."

W P., CA (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"The seats in my Prius are more comfortable. The door opening in my Prius is higher so I don't have to scrunch in which can be painful for my back."

A D., CA (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"I love the auto heated seats, they work very well. Also the climate control is excellent and the seats are comfortable."

HOWARD B., WI (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I bought a very clean certified used vehicle for well over 50% discount from new."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"Purchased used at about the same price a similar Chevy Cruze would have been. That was a great deal considering the driving experience is better and driving cost is less"

IVAN G., TN (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"When fuel prices were higher this car had other cars beat hands down"

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"Bought this car sued because of how well we loved our 2013 Volt. WOnderful car!! Almost as wonderful as the 2013 model."

B B., MI (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"commuting 12 miles, it is used almost entirely on electric. and the ability to use it in commuter lanes without having other people in the car."

MICHAEL B., CA (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"The operating costs are extremely low. I've filled it with gas only 8 times over 4-1/2 years of ownership and 43,000 miles of driving and changed the oil only twice due to the age of the oil, not the mileage. It's been one of the most dependable cars I've ever owned. The hatchback design is great for carrying things such as our two bicycles."

ROBERT B., NC (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"Great Value, got ours as a left over demo for 24500 + we got a 7500 tax credit!"

COSTANZA R., MO (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"Rarely use gasoline except for long trips, then get approx 400 miles on a fillup."

PATRECIA C., MS (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"Don't mind the premium gas required since it uses so little. It's out in-town car. We switched to time-of-day price for our electric service. That saves a bunch. Dashboard is a confusing mess. Also, I have to lower my seat from my wife's driving position. This is not for comfort. It has to be lowered simply to get into the car."

MICHAEL P., MN (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"I use the Volt mostly close to home. As a result, I use it almost 100% of the time on battery and very rarely purchase gas. My cost to operate the car is basically zero because of the low cost of electrical charging - I average less than one gallon of gas purchase per month."

ARTHUR C., MI (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

Anonymous, BC (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"Sharp looking and comfortable! Could use the extra seat in back tho."

B B., MI (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"It has a very modern and appealing look especially compared to many other electric vehicles."

LARRY B., CA (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"Does not look like every other car! you know a volt when you see one"

COSTANZA R., MO (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"I think it's a great looking car"

HOWARD B., WI (2012 Chevrolet Volt)

"The car looks great, inside and out. It has a great sound system, a super quiet engine, and almost no wind noise; so listening to music is great."
