The Volt is an electric car for drivers who don't want to be limited by battery range. It usually allows you to drive gas-free for 35 miles, however the exact number depends on weather and driving style. In our testing, it ranged from 20 to 50 miles. When the battery is depleted, a backup gasoline engine kicks in to keep the electric motor running. This allows you to keep driving for up to 315 more miles before refueling.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"Visibility for the driver is poor. Windows are small, waistline is high, windshield pillars way too wide."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"I drive with my Volt in 'Low' to take advantage of the regenerative braking and to slow down without using the brakes. I think the disc brakes will last much longer that way. At the same time, I use 'Sport mode' so I can take off quickly to merge onto a freeway."

SOLHEIM K., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The performance with battery power is very good. And judicious use of "hold' mode on extended trips when I can maintain constant speed seems to stretch the battery range beyond the miles I mentioned"

Anonymous, WA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"In ordinary traffic, it shoots forward swiftly and smoothly when asked to. Passengers almost always express surprise at its smooth and responsive acceleration. It corners very well for a front-wheel drive car."

P V., IL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Surprised by great acceleration. Handling nice and tight. Good roads manners."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"It has problems on mountain slopes. The work arounds provided by the car are unsatisfactory. The fact that the battery doesn't charge when the gasoline engine is running is unsatisfactory. Requirement for using high octane gasoline seems bad design."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The handling is ok, but seems a bit sluggish when cornering more aggressively. The acceleration is good in the range of 15-35 mph, but otherwise is pretty ordinary at best."

DAVID C., TX (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"This car accelerates and handles better than any car I have owned."

CORY B., FL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"good acceleration, battery life, comfort"

MARK E., TX (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Excellent driving. Nimble, steady, fast response ."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Quiet, instant acceptation, fun to drive!"

NATHAN F., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The EV driving experience is excellent as is acceleration in city traffic. I will never buy another car without a plug."

BILL T., TX (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The Volt is the most fun to drive of any car I've ever owned. It handles like a sports car. With the electric motor, the torque is always immediately available to accelerate, no need to wait for a downshift or for the engine to reach peak rpm's."

TERRY C., CO (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"torque response much more predictable than ICE vehicle."

BOB W., TX (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very fast when on electric. Handles nicely. I do not like the braking system. When the car is going down a hill, you need to press VERY hard to stop the car. I told Chevy about this an they explained that it is not a direct braking system, and therefore this problem is by design."

Mitch N., WA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Compared to all of my previous under-powered cars the Volt allows me to maneuver out of potentially dangerous situations."

Bob W., TX (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The battery makes this a fairly heavy car, but the instant power of electricity provides unexpected acceleration. The Volt runs nearly silently on electricity and I think due to a well insulated cab. On curves it feels nimble. I always feel safe in my Volt."

Nathan F., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"I love the way it accelerates and handles. It is fast and quiet. I feel like I'm in a space ship."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very smooth ride and responsive handling with quiet operation"

Anonymous, IN (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Excellent acceleration and handling."

Robert S., FL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Again, the car accelerates much faster than most gasoline powered cars from a dead stop to about 40 mph. The car is also very responsive to the steering."

Gary D., FL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The acceleration is very smooth and quick. The noise level is lower than other cars I have had. I actually like the car more than when I first bought it."

K F., IL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"When using "Sport" mode the acceleration is excellent especially at low speed. The comfort of not having gears shifting is something you have to experience to appreciate."

Ivan G., TN (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The Volt is very smooth and effortless in acceleration. The instant torque at low speeds is terrific, and the car is very quiet when accelerating."

Ivan J., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"More fun to drive than my previous 3 series BMW"

Anonymous, MN (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"sport mode is easy quick and fun"

Len P., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Electric drive is very quick, silent and fun."

Darrell W., OR (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"It's 4 years old and the battery has not degraded a bit. I'm using this car optimally. That is, I drive less than 35 miles a day and occasionally have to take a trip with it so it literally goes months without running the gas engine - I have triggered the maintenance mode twice. That said, it's not Tesla fast but it's going to feel quick with that electric torque and without all those pesky gears to change. Since the batteries are low, even with eco tires it handles well, like a comfy sports car."

Jason S., NC (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"the best handling car I have ever driven due to the low center of gravity. Handles like a slot car, grabs the road and won't let go"

Kim F., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Smooth, high acceleration - electric drive, so there is no transmission"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very quick pickup. Nice that braking and downshifting regenerate the battery."

Nicholas S., KS (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Acceleration is great, handling is much better than with my old Honda Civic"

Brian F., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Great acceleration from 0-40. The single speed transmission is very smooth."

Wayne L., PA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Quick and fun in sport mode for the initial acceleration. Drives like a gas powered car, except when going up mountains- has a very hard time getting up the Grapevine"

Christopher R., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Electric is like driving a spaceship"

Anonymous, KS (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Our '14 Volt drives very well--smooth, quiet, and solidly planted. It has multiple drive modes (hold, sport, mountain, and normal). I use Hold mode on long journeys , and save the battery range when I drive in the city. Even over 3 years later, and 53k miles, the car still drives and feels new. This was our first GM product--we've previously owned Toyotas, Nissans, and Hondas in the past. The driving experience of this car is superior to that of the Prius."

Ivan J., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"We make every effort to maximize the use of the all electric mode of driving. Electric operation is a delight, so smooth, powerful and quiet. The nimbleness is very much appreciated in running errands and the over the road experience is very confidence inspiring, almost that of a sports sedan. This has been an EXCELLENT vehicle in every respects."

Warren K., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Nice acceleration. Very quiet. Added weight of batteries seems to help with stability in snowy weather."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"very good emergency handling and handling in the snow due to low center of gravity and heavy battery."

Douglas H., CO (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"very peppy and easy to drive and park in city and highway"

Earl J., NB (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Overall acceleration and handling is quite reasonable, however one would expect that an EV would have more torque than is available. Disabling the traction control is simple to do for those areas where that is appropriate. The factory tires, while highly efficient, are lacking in performance; after market tires perform well and efficiently if tire pressure is increased."

Jonathan K., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"As it is fully electric and has direct drive by the electric motors, the car accelerates from a stop much of quickly than a gasoline powered car. The turning radius in less than that of my maxima too. The car has handled well in the nearly 4 years I have had the car."

Gary D., FL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"no electric seats and reline lever is impossible to use."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very uncomfortable seat for tall drivers."

PAUL G., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The heater does not work at all in battery mode. The engine must be running to heat the car."

DAVID H., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Quiet as a car can be, and vastly more comfortable than your review would indicate. When encountering bumps in the road, it handles and rides like a much bigger car, and much better than its Toyota counterpart. And I feel sorry for anyone relying on your description of its 'anemic' heater. The gas motor kicks in on cold days and the typical Chevy heater will drive you out of the car."

P V., IL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"No room in back seats for feet. There is no partition from interior of car to trunk area. Do not like having no spare tire. Had a flat and put in the can of stop leak aired it back up. When I took it to the tire shop it cost me a new tire because of the stop leak goo."

MICHAEL P., AR (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Interior is too cramped, and for the price, full leather would have improveded the value."

CHRISTOP R., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Love the car but hate the seats, which are painful on one's rear end and thighs. This applies to both average and overweight people."

NATHAN F., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"My husband is 5'9" and I am 5'1" both of us are uncomfortable in the seats and we drive another vehicle whenever possible. The poor sight lines make it difficult for me to drive as well."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Seats uncomfortable. Cramped for one us - over 6' tall."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The road noise is more pronounced in the Volt than in my previous vehicle which was a Prius. I expected a quieter ride in a vehicle at it's price level. This is the only area I have found the Volt to be less than perfect. That said, a little road noise is a small price to pay for the excellent mileage we achieve."

GARY K., OH (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Seats fine, climate control likewise, but there is a fair amount of road noise."

ANNETTE R., FL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"There is absolutely no noise of any kind. Quietest car I ever owned. The electronics in climate control etc are the best I have ever seen."

GARY D., FL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very comfortable front seats."

Anonymous, NV (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"I’m 6‿3‿ and feel very cramped in the car. The air conditioner has trouble getting cool in the Southern California heat."

Matt M., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Tire noise only when in electric drive"

Bob W., TX (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Noise and ride are excellent. Seats aren’t too comfortable for taller drivers."

Paul G., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The chevrolet seats are too stiff and uncomfortable at the very base portion of the seat pan."

Wayne L., PA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"firm seats that wrap around both the driver and passenger, very quiet interior when using electric only"

Kim F., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"There is a a fair amount of road noise. Otherwise, the car is very quite."

Daniel D., IA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The seats are ok on comfort, needs more cushioning in the seat bottom."

Leland T., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"My seats are suede, I'm going to be real sad when I eventually get another car, ya'll don't know how nice these are on hot or cold day. I've felt like the 1st Gen Volts are a premium limited run car and they feel like it, very solid, no rattles, etc and extremely quiet - it freaks passengers out. However, it's true that the heat is real bad and kills your range if you run it but the heated seats are good. I live in the south and I've found that pre-heating it in the morning mostly fixes that shortcoming. The AC is great though and barely impacts your driving range, a big plus in the south. I seriously love this car."

Jason S., NC (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The electric drive is exceptionally smooth and reliable. I love it."

Roger K., TX (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The front seats come up at the sides and are not wide enough. They hit my hips and irritate them. I have to sit on a pillow to have a level seat."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Back seats don't fit tall people well."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very low levels of noise and comfortable seats."

Ivan G., TN (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"I wish the seats were electric and had memorry"

Michael M., BC (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very loud when engine kicks on. Unnerving at times, actually."

Christopher R., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"harsher ride (sport suspension) than my previous Prius"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"To save weight Chevrolet has stripped soundproofing and reduced the quality of the suspension. They have reduced the level of robustness making it delicate and prone to failure."

Norman W., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The front seat should come back farther for long legs"

Tim S., AL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The ‘14 Volt is very comfortable. Very quiet, smooth, and composed. I find the seats offering good support—especially on long drives."

Ivan J., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Not room enough. Pretty tight inside…"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"This is an all around great driving car, it's not meant to be sporty but it manages to strike a balance between comfort and sporty, the low battery helps. Seats are leather and suede which is unusual and fantastic feeling year around, they're buckets but aren't too tight on the sides like some European brands. Due to the center battery, the console is high and large, my elbow has a tendency to lean into the cupholder, but hey, it's a 1st gen car. Of course it's silent most of the time, it's v..."

Jason S., NC (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Driving while on electric is uncanny. It is smooth and quiet almost like flying. I will try never by a gas powered car if given an electric option. I have a friend with a Tesla and another with a PHEV Ford and they feel the same."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I buy a couple of gallons of gas every 4 months."

DAVID T., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Horrendous resale value. How could a car so good lose so much of its value so quickly?"

CHRISTOPHER B., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"I cannot value a car that comes with abysmal customer service! I would not wish this car on anyone."

DAVID H., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The Volt is so economical to operate. 35 plus mpg on gas is also impressive for a car that weighs 4000 pounds without people and cargo."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"With 10,000 in tax credits and a lower price, was a great value compared to anything else I saw."

Anonymous, MA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The car was an excellent value when the various tax credits were figured in. I believe we paid around $23,000 net for the car, and at that price it was a great value."

DANIEL S., NY (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"I've had my Volt for nearly 3 years now. Have put almost 43K miles on it. I've had periods of up to 3 months/2500 miles between fillups. The car has exceeded my expectations in terms of fuel mileage. Lifetime mpge is currently 85.7. If I didn't use it on the road as often as I do, lifetime mileage would be much higher."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Fun to drive on battery & gasoline electric generator. Handles great on twisty mountain roads & long distance highway drives. Comfortable in town & on the higheay for long trips."

BERNARD B., TX (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"This has to be the cheapest vehicle on the planet when considering features, operating expense, etc. Incredible value."

DAVID C., TX (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Great value."

Anonymous, NV (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Good initial price with 7500 tax credit Great mileage"

Anonymous, MN (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Perfect blend of range vs. battery weight. Gets me to work and back on a charge which I get for free at work. On weekends the engine kicks in I usually average 70mpg for the ~120 miles I travel on weekends. Most reliable car I've owned so far and I have only replaced two front tires (I don't rotate them) in 41000 miles. Even the wipers are originals and it's parked in the sun. I only service it when the oil change monitor tells me. Since I drive mostly electric, the oil seems to be lasting a long time."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Electric is much less expensive in terms of maintenance. The fuel costs are much lower than gasoline only cars. The car is virtually noise less. Acceleration from a dead stop is better and more responsive than most gasoline powered cars"

Gary D., FL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"I love the electric system. I plug in every night and have found ways to plug in at my three work sites since it used standard 110. In this way I use almost no gasoline. I can run on electric almost indefinitely even though I live in a rural area. When I do need to take s trip, I use gas. I calculate the fuel savings when factoring in the cost of electricity at $100/month. Plus the reduction in emissions is very important to me."

Nathan F., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The vehicles unique ability to operate primarily as an electric car but with unlimited range using gas is very satisfying. The vehicle's reliability is outstanding."

Roger K., TX (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The car is very delicate, for example I have replaced several aluminum wheels. This has never happened to me before in 50 years of driving. The noise level in the car is high. Seat comfort is poor. I would never buy this car again."

Norman W., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"98% electric. Appx 1800 mpg. 32 gallons total lifetime for 55000 miles. Charge both directions from work. Definitely saved on fuel costs. About $1 per day to charge at home."

Chris D., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"It rides very well, and it requires little maintenance. Love the car."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Outstanding car for suburban living; most trips are less than 40 miles and thus use no gas. But I don't worry about long trips because I have an engine."

David C., VA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Driving on the battery only"

Len P., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Nice to have extended range of gas engine until a way of recharging that takes approximately the same amount of time as filling gas tank"

Nicholas S., KS (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"For an expensive car, the backup camera is cheap and nearly useless because it has no guides on the image to help discern distances."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"I was able to get several discounts including a rebate of $7500 from the federal government as a tax credit. I drive a lot of miles during the day (almost 100) . However, my gasoline consumption if $15-19 per week."

Gary D., FL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"I believe the Chevy Volt is one of the most underappreciated vehicles available. The vehicle is very well built, with lots of thoughtful features. The solid engineering is apparent the moment the vehicle is driven--very smooth, quiet, and effortless. A lot of people don't realize that there's very little maintenance required on the vehicle. Oil changes are every 2 years (or nearly 40k miles for me). Aside from the oil changes, the other maintenance is no different from that of a regular EV-..."

Ivan J., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"The retention of value has been horrible. Although the car has been a wonderful vehicle, I would have been far better served to buy a used Volt, and saved 25,000 dollars in depreciation."

Christopher B., CA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very economical to operate. With tax rebate and dealer incentives not priced higher than comparqble gasoline only cars. Can operate on battery only for 90% of driving."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"By being able to charge at home and at work, I use significantly less gas and was able to recover the extra cost of the vehicle (over what I would have paid for a non-electric vehicle) very quickly."

Miranda D., MA (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"good value, especially if you do a lot of suburban/city driving where you can maximize the large battery"

Douglas H., CO (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"The styling is peculiar but overall it a most practical car because of the fifth door."

JEAN-GEORGES L., QC (2014 Chevrolet Volt)

"For aerodynamic purposes the designers made some styling decisions that put function way before form."

CORY B., FL (2014 Chevrolet Volt)
