Ever since it appeared on the electric car scene in 2011, the Chevy Volt brought a measure of practicality and peace of mind with its supplemental gas engine that would kick in to extend the Volt's limited battery-only range. Now, redesigned for 2016, the Volt returns as a more mature and capable car.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 420,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2019 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Chevrolet Volt owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Backup sensors are overly sensitive and constantly raising alarms unnecessarily (literally every time I'm backing out of my garage)"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Problems with sensors and timely replacement Vu the dealer"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The center stack display would occasionally gradually lose functionality. For example, adjustment of the climate control fan speed would not register on the display showing fan speed. After a bit, it became difficult or impossible to switch between different functional displays. A couple of times the vehicle propulsion display showed the gas engine/generator, electric motor and battery all OFF, even though the car was traveling down the road at the time. Eventually the display would freeze up c"

Peter W., MD (2016 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Display screen goes blank

"Screen went dark while radio still on. Could only control radio from steering wheel controls. Took six weeks to get a new module"

Jim H., CA (2016 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Screen went v\blank after tire replacement which caused low pressure sensor to go on. Dealer had to unplug screen and replug it to fix"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Screen went blank for more than one week and had to be replaced by the dealer. It took almost another week for the screen replacement to be approved by GM"

Erick M., CA (2016 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Apple CarPlay is unusable and locks up the entire entertainment system until the vehicle is powered down and restarted"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Music playback from my phone over Bluetooth sometimes does not resume after starting the car, or resumes at double speed (and I have to stop and restart it to get it to play normally)"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Occasionally when the car starts, USB music plugged into the car can fail. The only way for it to go back to normal is to turn the car off and turn it back on"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Locks up every time, Apple CarPlay is unusable"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Amplifier was replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

What Owners Say

Electrical failure

"Upon attempted startup, complete electrical failure. Vehicle had to be towed back to dealer"

Edward G., CA (2016 Chevrolet Volt LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"I suspect that the problem was that the brake pads were not properly bedded into the rotors, or the calipers were not working freely because the brake pistons were not yet worn in due to low miles and light brake usage. The symptom was a hard pull to the right during an emergency stop, causing the car to move into the lane to the right. The problem was repeatable, so I took it to the dealer for warranty repair. They claimed to find no problem. I notified the Chevrolet customer service site on"

Peter W., MD (2016 Chevrolet Volt Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
